500MB VAS reduction and increase FPS by 22% in V3 ... need some testers

Featured Replies

Did my first test today... It clearly shows that I am GPU limited. The 970 GTX is too weak for 4k and pretty high details I guess.

But I am heaving around 50 - 60 FPS in not very crowded areas.

Will do a test tomorrow in OMDB with much traffic. But I guess I am still GPU limited there. But if not I will try the "HT off"...

  • Funny that Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V work just fine for me:   Copy/pasting a link is likewise working just fine...   http://www.avsim.com/topic/476776-500mb-vas-reduction-and-increase-fps-by-22-in-v3-nee

  • It's a well-known IE11 issue, I tried Edge once (once was enough) and if memory serves me right it inherited this "feature".   Other browsers work fine. MS lost me as a browser customer for now.

  • Appreciate the post Steve. Very detailed, on topic and informative.   Regards, - Hasan

Hi MJ,

Thanks for testing ... it's a little odd that you started with with much higher VAS usage with HT OFF but ended up with less VAS usage overall with HT OFF vs. HT ON.  Did you do any view changes/panning just before data logging?

What I typically do is two full 360 view rotations in VC and then got to Spot mode and do another two 360 rotations around aircraft (slow rotations) to ensure textures get loaded ... then start VAS logging.

Cheers, Rob.

Hi Swiesma,

FYI, you are not looking at VAS ... you only have Private Byte and Working Set.  To get VAS to show in Process Explorer you need to right click on the column header area and select "Select Columns" ... in that dialog box select "Process Memory" tab ... now check "Virtual Size" ... that's the VAS data I'm interested in.

Cheers, Rob.

Short update im 100 nm out of west midland an i have much higer settings then in my post yesterday.

Actually i have 760 mb was free where i had with less demanding settings and ht on about 200 mb left.

I can see my 980ti running at 50 % load but now the 5820k is between 80 and 90 % without HT load where it had yesterday only 20-30 % with HT on.

Brgds

Update:

Landed with 350 mb of vas left but as i allready told you i have much higer p3d settings and also 10 cloud layers ,uk2000 egxx and it rained.

So the vas is ok for my settings.

And i also can say that for me there is a clear difference between ht on (lower vas left and oom) and ht off ( even with high settings enough vas left).

Thanks for the update ... 5820K is 6/12 core LGA2011-v3 x99 also ... so if I understand you correctly you're also seeing about 500MB  less VAS usage with HT OFF (6 physical cores) taking into consideration your higher settings in the HT OFF flight?

Cheers, Rob.

A quick test with repeated scenarios, no randoms.

HT=On in the top two graphs, HT=Off lower two graphs.

On the left, no [JOBSCHEDULER] section.

On the right, a reasonable Affinity Mask applied. Commas denote grouping of HT pairs. (edit: changed to top down shots)

The worst performance and most initial VAS consumed was with HT enabled and no Affinity Mask applied.

The best performance was with an appropriate AM applied, HT enabled or disabled.

Least initial VAS consumed was with least threads, HT enabled or disabled.

Here's some quick results:

Steve Waite: Engineer at codelegend.com

I think it comes down to the fact that P3D is still based on FSX code

FSX was and still designed as a single thread application optimized for single core CPU,

with SP1 they did little code trick to offload few element to other cores when enabled, but it is still only 4 threads max!

They didn’t change the core design; only used a trick to load dem weather etc utilizing other cores

the main core rendering the flight is always at full capacity; while the others barely do much; even with AM setting which helps a bit,

it is still a single thread split to 4 - 70/10/10/10, while the main flight engine is still fully stressed on its own core and cannot be split,

what I believe we are seeing here is optimization of DX11 with a single core CPU as designed originally!

Hi Rob

I would like to thank you for posting your videos to your youtube channel as I am a subscriber and never miss a video.

They're very useful as I too am running in 4k and have little time to spend optimizing p3dv3.

I have been following along with your tests and with settings basically the same. I turned off HT and experienced an increase of about 5-7 fps in the Duke. I haven't yet tested VAS.

6700k @ 4.8

2 x GTX 970 SLI

G.Skill 16 gb

Samsung 78" Curved UHD

I'm still doing more testing with both 30hz and 60hz and frames set to unlimited.

So far 60hz looks a little better and i'm not sure i'm experiencing stutters.

Cheers

Steve

I have been reading this thread with interest.

It seems that with HT off and AM Free VAS is higher and FPS are also higher.

Some experienced less smoothness however...,

Up to now I am flying with HT on , AM = 3392 (6-core) and where I couldn't go any higher than LOD=4.5 I now use 6.5.

Also Max Cloud draw distance from 70 to 80.

FPS set to 26 and Refresh rate of 25 Hrtz.

At the most detailed airport with MT , photoscenery and an overcast I am able to stay at 25-26 FPS with a 3 monitor view at 5920x1080 and 2x SGSS...

Thanks for your report on the 6700k, will try it tonight too.

Thanks @Rob for the right settings in Process Explorer.

OT: @Steve: Which cooler do you use for the 6700k@4,8 GHz? I am running an Alpenföhn Brocken for 4,5 GHz...

The worst performance and most initial VAS consumed was with HT enabled and no Affinity Mask applied.

Here's some quick results:

Thanks Steve, your last graph HT OFF with AM=30 (core 0 off, 1,2,3,4 on, 5 off) appears to be the better ... which suggest anything above 4 physical cores is not helpful (other than to run OS and any other tasks, but for P3D).  I will try HT OFF and disable 4 physical cores  in my EFI and see what results I get.

Correct rob.

If my wife alows it :-) i will test today the same flight with the same settings with ht on.

If the ht problem is there i will not get even close to egnx and the coast of england.

I know this information isn't new to experienced members, but it's a good relevant read about multi-threading in FSX/P3D. It seems this engine is only cooked to serve four cores practically, although it seems able to address many more cores.

Trying to get more threading info from LM, but they're pretty swamped with V3 release right now.

Cheers, Rob.

Short update HT on with no affinity mask 120 nm to egnx and only 215 mb vas left.

Update:

50 nm out and now i have the oom where i had about 450 mb left yesterday. And i have to say yesterday there was light rain with many clouds, and today there where only few clouds and no rain.
