OOM over England in P3D V3

Recommended Posts

Your post won't be removed.

It was just a matter of time before OOM errors would start showing up in V3. The memory cleanup has been improved over 2.5, but the whole concept is still a cumbersome workaround that will eventually fail.

What I see is a developer TRYING to solve a problem, one step at a time. I read some of these posts and some posters seem to expect LM to wave a magic wand and *poof* - all our OOM's are gone. If only it were that easy. I am one of the lucky ones, my type of flying and addons don't often result in OOM's, evan after several hours. I understand the frustration of those that get them frequently.

There is a definite improvement between 2.5 and 3.0 - an improvement, NOT a solution - yet people still complain and blame LM.  Unfairly, IMHO. They made some changes in 3.0 - if that results in a larger group that do not OOM, then that is good. They hear our complaints and they haven't given up but please remember it's  step by step. If THIS iteration doesn't solve YOUR OOM, perhaps the next will.

They COULD be saying that there's nothing they can do but they keep working.

I call that a BIG positive.

Vic

Sorry for a negative post, buts thats the cold hard truth of it.

The only con is the one you are trying to sell to yourself as "truth" - "turn everything off" - that's a wild exaggeration.

I've done many flights in the PMDG 777 using these graphics settings: http://www.robainscough.com/P3DV3_Settings_Medium.html

And using these Add-ons:

FT YSSY (airports vary, but always use 3rd party airports for departure and destination)

FB KSFO

Orbx FTX Global

Orbx OpenLC EU and NA

Orbx HD Trees

PILOT's FTX Edition Mesh

FSDT GSX

PrecipitFX

ASN

MyTraffic 6

FSUIPC

GoFlight Interface Tool

FSCommander 9.x

For GA flying I'll use Orbx Regions but rarely use Orbx Regions for complex Aircraft like PMDG, Aerosoft, Majestic, etc. -- that's ONE compromise ... easy enough to live with and FTX Global and OpenLC EU/NA are pretty close in detail to a Region.

Far far from "turning everything off".  I've avoid getting involved in these endless OOM threads recently primarily because:

1.  Rarely is accurate and COMPLETE information provide by those having OOM problems

2.  Hacked installs and migrations which just make matters worse (and they are rarely mentioned ... probably on purpose)

3.  Mix and match of 3rd party products that operate on the same class and all active

4.  Adding products that swap in their own DXGI

5.  Swap in/out core VC runtime DLL without a thought -- no they aren't the same as those DLL's used in the DLL.XML file and can't just be swapped around

6.  Don't follow documented and existing diagnostic processes you can find here on AVSIM (and other sites)

7.  Users not even knowing that the scenery library exists

The results you get from ANY flight sim platform are equal to the effort you put into it ... welcome to flight simulation, it's not for the timid, it's not for the max everything and install everything xbox type of user.  You'll need to work with it not against it if you want to be reward with a simulated process ... it can be easy, but for each and every add-on you buy and install, you've increased complexity.

Cheers, Rob.

In my experience, the VAS management in P3D v3 is a MASSIVE improvement compared to v2.x. I recently made a test flight around London with all of my scenery enabled (and at maximum scenery and custom tree autogen complexity), PlayHorizon VFR GenX photoscenery, and UT2 AI traffic @ 100% (we are talking over 200 detailed AI planes at Aerosoft Heathrow Extended and UK2000 Gatwick Xtreme alone, and plenty more at other nearby airports and airfields), and it passed the test with flying colours. I know for a fact that if I had tried the same test in P3D v2.4, I would have suffered an OOM after I had barely left the ground!

I suffered OOMs on a frequent basis in FSX and earlier versions of P3D, so this was the single most important feature of v3 for me. I can honestly say that if this improved VAS management was the only improvement provided in v3, then it would still be worth every penny.

I agree Christopher.  Using P3Dv2 or FSX on a flight from FSDT KORD, in my PMDG777, with ASN, I would always get an OOM or be on the verge of an OOM with 300MB's of VAS remaining upon landing at FlightBeam's KIAD in heavy weather.  Now, with the same scenario in v3, I have almost well over 1GB of VAS remaining.  I don't use tweaks, do not have my system overclocked, and do not have my P3D settings set to the max but I have plenty of Autogen and AI and the graphics are all crisp and clear.

Activating FTX regions with complex airliners (especially PMDG) is tantamount to memory suicide with any version of FSX or P3D. That said, sticking with FTX Global + Open LC + Vector (all but primary roads off) seems to be fine, and I have not suffered any memory issues yet, fingers crossed!

Hi, question from a soon-to-be first time P3Dv3 user. I have a lot of add-ons for FSX over the years and today after much research currently have P3Dv3 downloading right now. Should be complete for installment tomorrow. Is it possible to just copy and paste most of my Add-ons from FSX/Addon files to P3D/Addon files and just activate them or are we looking at a long couple of days and bandwidth re-downloading and installing files some over a GB in size? Any information is appreciated and as far as the OOM's i hope we have seen the last with P3D as it matures.

Best to discuss this in the P3D Forum but, in my case, I was able to relink all of my photoscenery (MSE V2 stuff) in the P3D's scenery.cfg.  Photoscenery directories can be linked in any scenery.cfg no matter the sim. Most commercial scenery like FSDT and FlightBeam stuff will have to be downloaded and reinstalled (they have v3 installers).  No other solution.  All of your commercial aircraft, like PMDG, will have to be reinstalled using a v3 installer.  No other solution but commercial aircraft and FSDT stuff does not contain a lot of GB's.  Photoscenery has a lot of GB's and that should never ever be reinstalled even if you reformat your HDD and reinstall Windows as Photoscenery directories should be kept on other HDD's.

Tonight oom was  with using robs settings with only kmia v2 installed and aerosoft egll.

someone please have a look and give me some wisdom here.

That's interesting Rob.   I never thought about it to much and always ticked all the boxs,  but it makes sense to only tick the boxs you want really,  hence saving some performance

Hi Elaine,

I rarely fly in/out of default airports, always 3rd party so no need for any Taxiway/Airport settings, I use Water = high so not much need for wave animation and I'm happy with existing water textures.  Ok with P3D sounds, so basically use REX for Sky/Cloud/Sun.  But to each his/her own.

Cheers, Rob.

EDIT: Flight simulation is a set of compromises, have to figure out how to make them all work well with each other.

Well thats very true.

Hi Elaine,

I didn't know that,  I thought it was Rex that made the 3rd party Airports/Taxiway Glow. Very good i will be changing some settings for sure.  Ok now i know everything. I feel another Tutorial coming on
