Is it true, that AA settings not necessary with high resolution monitors/4k display?

Featured Replies

I have read on somewhere that people are saying with high resolution like 2560x1600 and above, that messing with AA settings via the NV Inspector is no longer necessary, is this true?

If so, can I remove any AA settings that I've applied in order to get more performance?

I am running P3D v3 on a 30" display at 2560x1600, frames locked at 30fps.

My AA settings in P3D are:

FXAA = OFF

MSAA = 4x

Texture Filtering = 2x

Texture Resolution = 2048x2048

NVI Settings:

AA Mode = Enhance the application setting

AA Setting = 4x Multisampling

AA Transparency Super Sampling = 2x Sparse Grid Supersampling

Anisoptric filtering setting = 16x

Multidisplay/mixed GPU acceleration = Single display performance mode

Power management mode = Prefer Maximum performance

UPDATE: I just did a test. I went into NVI and restore the p3d settings back to default, which essentially removes all of the AA settings. Loaded p3d back up with my same settings as above, and notice no changes at all in how the graphics look. Still crisp and jagged free! And my FPS is now hovering around 35-45FPS! I guess this holds true then.

I have DSR turned way up and dont have to use NI. Shimmering is very minimal.

Jason what resolution do you run at and could you show me your DSR settings in the NVIDIA Control Panel. I haven't messed with that yet. However I do see some shimmering when looking at certain things, and would like to get rid of that.

You basically have to run a very high resolution so that there are more pixels thus less anti aliasing. DSR gives you a super resolution. 3200 pixels by something, can't remember the other one.

But yes. Less or no AA is needed when running at such high resolutions

I'm running P3d natively at 2560x1600, so I guess I don't need DSR then.

Try x2 or x2.25 DSR.

That will give you 3620x2263 or 3840x2400.

Probable wouldn't want to go higher than that.

Will this have any effect on my FPS?

What do you have DSR on?

I cant remember right off, Im at work and away from my machine. Ill look tomorrow and post back.

Depends on your hardware.

Just try it and see.

You won't break anything.

Easy enough to go back to native resolution if it does not work for you.

I didnt notice any frame loss with DSR, its a much better result than losing frames with SGSS in my opinion. Like I said I still have some shimmering but I have to look for it vs it sticking out like a sore thumb.

My specs GTX780

3840x2160x32

FXAA on

MSAA 8

Ansiotropic 16

2048 Textures

VSYNC and Triple Buffer on

Frames set to unlimited

Nvidia control panel settings

All default except

Single display on

Maximum Power

DSR checked with Smoothness set to 40%

Dont forget after you set the higher resolution for DSR in P3D options go back in the sim and hit alt+enter twice so the resolution changes.

Don't the gauges look tiny at that resolution?

They look the same size to me but I use a 55" tv for a monitor, if anything they are sharper. Red text is hard to read and the water mark is almost invisible, ATC window text is also harder to read but the gauges seem fine.

I played w/ it using but it seemed when you go out of native resolution you get a degree of fuzziness you didn't have before and I didn't like that.  I've only done it thru the Win 7 driver not Inspector.

Did you try reducing the smoothing factor from the default 33%?
