Microsoft Presentation at the AVSIM Convention

Featured Replies

Hi all,Tom Allensworth has kindly given me permission to post a description of the MS presentation (complete with somewhat blurry images) on my web site. I also give a running commentary on the presentation, and a very short overview of the meeting.http://www.calclassic.com/avsim2005.htmEnjoy,--Tom GibsonCal Classic Propliner Page: http://www.calclassic.comFreeflight Design Shop: http://www.freeflightdesign.comDrop by! ___x_x_(")_x_x___

Confirms my suspicions that FS10 will mainly be a 'shader' update. Looking very good though. Thanks for sharing this.Christian

It does seem to point to a mainly-eye-candy release. I don't see the point in all the graphics development but maybe they have carried the "flying" part of the sim as far as they can, or wish to, go. I guess I'm just one of the old guys that's not turned on by wing views and passenger seats at the expense of flight modeling and smoothness.Doug

Thanks Tom :-) I really appreciate the review. Well done. Milton

Thanks alot for the photos Tom. I wanted more realism in FDs and graphics, but I guess the talk was mostly centered on graphics. Hopefully nothing will be taken away from FS9. If the graphics are as good in FS10 as my imagination is when drooling over the eye candy, then I guess I'll be satisfied...For the moment.Bring on FS10, Microsoft!!!!-JeremyThe Ozark DogfighterHappy Flying!

Well, I'm not sure what to say. I want to know who these "advanced" users are who don't use flaps?!?! http://instagiber.net/smiliesdotcom/cwm/cwm/freak3.gif I can't imagine anyone who qualifies as advanced NOT using flaps. This makes absolutely no sense to me. Is it possible the flaps usage of add ons aren't always picked up by their software? Same with the some of the other stuff noted. Very odd.As far as the next version goes, I was really hoping for better ATC, NAVDATA, and AI more than anything. This is really all FS9 is lacking IMO. I'd be more excited to see an overhauled FS9, with improvements that allow us users to keep our FS9 add ons, but get more from the sim, such as those I mentioned above.

I dunno guys,I think this is simply what Dr. Carl has to show for his end of the project. Without being there for the Q and A, I'd say that we got a good glimpse into one area of improvement.I gotta tell you, a big part of Flightsim is the suspension of disbelief and these pictures tell me that they are going a LONG way towards that end.I do not think that this one presentation from 1 of 40-50 people precludes other advancements in the sim.I look forward to FS10.Jeff

Tom,THANKS for posting those shots. We've seen those before in a German sim magazine and they look AMAZING!What's also amazing is that some folks seem to think that ONLY graphics are going to be improved with FS10. Interesting, especially considering that MS has really released very little info at all about FS10. Let's face reality. . .does anyone really believe that MS is ONLY going to improve graphics with FS10?At least they are working on improvements. . .and those graphics ALONE would be worth the price of admission. . .along with a newer video card. . .IMHO.So, let me get this right for some. . .let's say MS does ONLY improve the graphics with this so-called BLOOM technology. . .we have the same compatability, flight models, frame rates etc.,. . .so you're telling me that you're NOT going to buy this?Let's face it. . .game industry leaders are constantly pushing the envelope with each new title in a franchise. All you have to do is look at the latest Half Life 2 and you'll know instantly what I'm talking about. . .it looks ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. . .and it's completely scalable for those not sporting the latest and greatest CPUs and GPUs.So why can't FS10 be any different? I say BRING IT ON MICROSOFT and show us something that will completely KNOCK OUR SOCKS OFF!. . .SHOW US WHAT YOU GOT!If FS10 looks anywhere as good as those screenshots. . .I'll be the first one standing in line for my tin-box copy.Gary Hawk(HAWKMAN)

Guys,You have NOT SEEN what the next version may or may not contain. You only saw a tiny little glimpese of what COULD be accomplished using just the current technology.DO NOT JUMP TO CONCLUSIONS, please.Further more you only saw someone's ideas of what could be applied to any other sim or game.I wasn't there and certainly do not want to take anyting away from their presentation, but I don't want everyone taking that presentation as the gospel as to what's going to happen in the next version.Just trying to nip this one in the bud before it gets way out of hand and the rumours start. Very nice of you to post those pics and report on what you saw.

Excellent review/commentary! Thanks very much :) I like the materials-reflection part. The wet runway looks very convincing. If I had one more wish for an FS9 Patch it would be solely for a *menu* system patch - for example making the map view in the flight planning pages fullscreen & smooth-scrolling (zooming & panning using mouse/mouse wheel)! Right now I find the little thumbnail-sized map with its clicky arrows highly annoying!

As I said on the Conference forum, many thanks for the excellent report. I found it most interesting and informative.Victor

Looks good .. very good ...Vern
