Microsoft is stepping up its Windows 10 push by making the OS a 'recommended' -- though not required -- update for Windows 7 and 8.1 users, beginning February 1.

I don't know anyone in the world who chooses the "Install updates automatically" option.

 

 

On my W8.1 laptop, I have it set to "Check for updates but let me choose to install them". Nothing has changed. No nagging nor "recommended upgrade" nor anything.

Millions of regular human beings know just enough to turn on the computer and get onto Facebook...... barely.

This is not really a surprise.

I get this message from MS about every second day.. it says over 100 million people have downloaded it so far.. what MS doesnt tell any one is that most of them did not get the upgrade from MS but rather from those who have already installed it.. us users are being used as mail boxes by MS  i.e. you not only pay for the data download to get it installed but then you pay for the data upload to everyone else.. This feature can be switched off but MS doesnt tell anyone that.   I am still on a slow internet data limited plan so the above is pertinent to me.

I am still not convinced that the benefits of moving FSX to W10 outweighs the potential bugs I am going to get.

I spent years getting my FS rig to work without problems, so why would I volunteer to create issues I dont need.

If by May this year there is enough feedback to show I wont have issues, then I will go to W10.

Windows 10, is the best yet. Easy to update and zero problems with any software which includes:- P3Dv3.1, FSX SE, Naval Action, IL-2 BOS, Rise Of Flight, Euro Truck 2, American Truck Sim, The Division (Beta), Star Wars Battlefront, Fallout 4, Elite Dangerous Horizons, Star Citizen and TS 2016. I also use the new Windows Hello with Tobii Eye X and sign in with eye recognition. 0% Probs 100% Fun.

This is all a moot point for people who want to switch over, of course.

I would never switch back to either 7 or 8.

The only reason I have not switched is the automatic updates, specifically my NVidia drivers. I have Win10 on an Intel NUC (mini pc) and it constantly reminds me to update the Intel 5000 video drivers. I have it set to defer upgrades.

Is there a way to stop this? How about if I just want to install an specific driver version, is it possible?

I recently bought a new pre-built gaming tower PC, and there was no option except to take pre-loaded Windows 10 - but I had some trepidation.  As it turns out that, except for a few programs & games that used to work in Win 7 no longer work.  I like Win 10 now.  It's easy to learn & use, and I have had no problems reinstalling and running FSX-SE, including all freeware and payware add-ons.  (And my new Intel 6700k chip gives me amazing FPS).

"Defer upgrades" stops major Windows revisions, like the Novemever update 1511, from installing immediately after release. It doesn't stop security updates or driver updates.
