April 6, 201610 yr But, what is the USB support AFTER the Windows 7 installation? For one example: If I have a back-up image on an external USB drive and I want to put that image back on my main drive, can I do it? Thanks, Jeff I think I'm right in saying that as a USB 2.0 device can be plugged into a 3.0 and 3.1 USB port, as they are backward compatible, you should be okay. I believe it's just during install that windows can't communicate due to the lack of native support. I don't believe Microsoft and Intel would prevent everybody from using their old USB 2.0 devices.. Double check though, I'm not 100% sure on that as I haven't really researched it as I went for W10.
April 6, 201610 yr Thanks, Martin. I was thinking along the same lines. April 6, 201610 yr That's great news. Thanks, Max. So it sounds like the only issues are using DVD and PS/2 keyboard when loading Windows 7, correct? And no tech supt. after 2018 (not a big deal). The ONLY tweak is FiberFrameFraction=0.10 I would like some recommendations on Affinity Masks- yes, I know the best way is to go through the calculation, however, what are other 6600K users currently happy with? After a few more weeks I will head towards 4.8gHz.... Ta! Carl Best- Carl Avari-Cooper

April 7, 201610 yr Author Yes, I actually bought a 980TI but when I read these sort of articles, and with early June around the corner, I sent it back and got the 750Ti to tide me over.... Any advice re. Affinity Mask settings for a 6700k? Best- Carl Avari-Cooper

Jeff Actually, the ROG boards (and, but this would need to be verified, all the Asus Z170 boards) can emulate PS2 from any USB mouse and keyboard, don't worry about it.

Jeff ASRock did create a W7 patcher, that avoids having to use PS2 keyboard and mouse. Not sure if it works with all motherboards or not. Having a look at the YouTube video, it looks pretty long winded, with CMD commands and all that stuff. Yes, I actually bought a 980TI but when I read these sort of articles, and with early June around the corner, I sent it back and got the 750Ti to tide me over.... Any advice re. Affinity Mask settings for a 6700k? That will be a top-notch system when you upgrade to Pascal Carl. STILL not built my rig due to refurbishing work, but did opt for the 980Ti. Who knows, if Pascal offers a substantial improvement I may sell it and upgrade. Point is though, I think I'm right in saying that the first Pascal cards will be reference designs. So I suspect to get the better non-reference designs we will have to wait a while. Not sure how long it is after the reference cards that the non-reference, superior, cards appear.
April 7, 201610 yr Author Enabling PS2 emulation allowed Windows 7 to install without issue. Just use a DVD. Then, FINALLY Samsung released the nVmi drivers for Win 7 so I put those on another CD, swapped during the load drivers portion of the install, SWAPPED BACK, and presto- a working M2 boot drive. ANYONE WITH AFFINITY MASK RECOMMENDATIONS FOR A 6700k W/ HT ON? Best- Carl Avari-Cooper
June 12, 20169 yr As long as you install from a DVD and not a USB drive, you'll be fine. As for me, I had a lot of trouble because I decided that I would migrate my current W7 install to a whole new computer without reinstalling. That's a very, very complex task that you shouldn't undertake unless you know exactly what you're doing (and then again, I had a lot of trouble). Hi - I am about to embark on this exercise, anything I should avoid ?. Or do right. I plan to move the two ssd's to the new rig, get everything working and then upgrade the ssd's to faster, higher capacity.
