AISmooth v. AISeparation

Featured Replies

I downloaded both of these programmes several months back but only recently got round to installing them (in the latest versions, that is).Firstly, how would people vote, one versus the other? I use AISmooth at the moment, because I didn't like the sound of the slew mode AISeparation apparently employs - some odd effects described. Also AISeparation looked much more confusing to set up. (Is it??).On the other hand, I now see that AISmooth is not really doing very much at all. I had the default settings for a while and then increased the range: aircraft coming in (I'm using Ultimate Traffic) show up on the board OK, with the right flight numbers, but AISmooth seems to do nothing about them. Jets still come in over my head and are cleared to land in front of me - even when I'm in 747s. (Good job I can't get my hands on the pilots!!).Any comments on the merits of the two programmes appreciated: I'd be happy to stick with AISmooth, IF I could get it to work!! (Again, help with that appreciated). Many thanks,Martin

Make sure you have the option that AI aircraft responds to user aircraft set in it's settings. Then The AI aircraft will be vectored away from your aircraft. The problem I have with it, is once aircraft is revectored, many times, they never get vectored back to land. Not a problem if all your doing is clearing airspace for your aircraft to land. Not good though, if you want to watch AI aircraft land, as many will not. Really the only way a module lke this can work properly is do it by priority. In other words, When it checks if an aircraft should be revectored, it compares a byte or a word in the aircraft object to others in the area. If equal or less than the other aircraft in the area it gets vectored and that byte/word is incremented. If the next check that byte is greater than the other aircraft's than it gets cleared to land and the other aircraft gets vectored and it's byte/word incremented. This of course requires a currently unused byte or word (Preferable - less chance of an overflow) in the aircraft object structure, which may not (and probably not, or else I would think it would be done already in AI Smooth) be available for use. The way AI Smooth is now many times when an aircraft revectored is rechecked afterwards other aircraft is in the area, causing it to be vectored again. Especially at very busy airports, like JFK or ORD.

Thanks

I use AISmooth, and since then have never had AI flyby on approach.scott s..

I use AISeparation.I've tried AISmooth but it simply doesn't work well for me. I like accurate AI and AISmooth does take away some of the realism in terms of arrivals, whereas AISeparation's technique preserves this more.In my trials I've found that AISmooth doesn't reduce go arounds as much with my AI levels as AISeperation. However, AISeperation *can* cause some oddities such as planes landing miles from the airport, but this is normally caused from immediate FS startup and having the "No Move" radius too small. Some people dislike either the concept of slewing or seeing the slewing take place. I have a lot of AI, and I've very rarely seen the slewing actually take place. Now, if you use traffic labels then you probably will see it more, but then wheres your line on realism, if slewing is unrealistic then aren't AI labels? My advise - try both. They are both easy to use and you can quickly see which one you prefer.

I used AIS for a while but on my EHSI TCAS it was disturbing to see the targets slewing out of the way at high speeds compared to other targets.I switched to AI Smooth and now with version 1.12 things are better.I have Respond To User off and AI separation at 90 sec to allow better AI departure queue efficiency and better chances for me to squeeze in a string of pearls situation. I use Radar Contact 4 which takes care of most conflicts with my aircraft and AI but before that version the use of TCAS and speed management allowed to to coordinate with AI.

Can't see why my installation of AISmooth, though it certainly shows aircraft as being monitored, just ignores them and lets them land anyway. The settings seem fine. If I can't get it to work I might as well unintall it....M.

If I can't>get it to work I might as well unintall it....>>M.I have had sucess when using AISmooth for regional flights. For instance, using it from KBUR to KLAS, or inter-island flights in Hawaii works well. When I did a couple long flight from KLAX to PHNL, I arrived finding that planes were still cleared in front of me. Not sure if there is an issue with long flights. Perhaps it gets confused when running for long time.I do see that many planes are monitored, but for some reason it doesn't work 100% of the time.I haven't tried AI Seperation yet as I'm not sure if I care for the slewing issue. At this point, I'm just looking for good seperation!- John

When spotting at airports with respond to user aircraft enabled an earlier version kept all AI from landing. On the short existance of its support forum I was encouraged to turn it off and then my problems were resolved. I have not heard any different.RC4 now manages AI locally around my aircraft to keep from getting overrun on final and speeds up ones in front. It also within close range resolves traffic conflicts using AI control enroute.I can't see having two applications attempt to control AI close by.>>>How does turning "respond to user" off help?>>Thanks,>>John

Hello John:I agree:I have no idea exactly how it does it and confess that it seems backwards to me too, but turning "respond to user" off works for me. With it on, I find myself getting go arounds pretty much the same way I did before AISmooth was installed. With it off, I am cleared to touch down on virtually all flights.Happy flying:RTH
