Second option is use of 4xMSAA with transparency AA set in NI to 4xSparseGridSupersampling. Second one is high performance hit with heavy clouds and not sure if 1070 is enough for 4xMSAA+4xSGSS. Lower values do not work that good and higher... there is not enough power The problem with DSR scaling is a) it doesn't work in windowed mode. I sim on a 46" TV sat on the sofa because I have a small family and my man cave was gone on the birth of my 2nd child. So I only have one screen and need to alt tab quickly :) b) the text is that small you can't actually see anything. Its already pretty bad because I am on the sofa about 2-3 feet away from the TV at 1080P. So I'm stuck with 4xSSAA to reduce shimmering even with the performance hit. Thomas Derbyshire
June 23, 20178 yr I bought myself a 1080ti a few weeks ago. Luckly I got some "unexpected" money. Yes, €800,- is a lot of money, so I hesitated a lot before I bought it. And I hope this card will last for a few years. I am very, very pleased with it. Though my processor is now the bottleneck, P3D runs awesome! I'm running in 4K now, almost every setting maxed out and 8x MSAA. I even applied the texture size 10x tweak. Dynamic Lights is also unabled, I even can apply some dynamic reflections but I turned it off now. I use Nvidia Inspector to lock the frames at 35. If I don't, the fps goes up to 100+ during cruise which is useless. At the ground FPS is mostly around 25 to 30 with some exceptions at heavy airports. The next thing is to upgrade my mobo and cpu, but for that I need again some "unexpected" money which I don't expect! The only problem is that photoscenery is not loading sharp (only after a scenery refresh) and that the loading times take forever. (properbly due to Texture size 10) I would say. If you have the money for a 1070, save a bit more for a 1080 or 1080ti or you can upgrade your card next year again! System: I7 2600k 4,5Ghz 16GB DDR3 RAM 1600Mhz GTX 1080ti
June 23, 20178 yr Hah, dynamic lighting : turn off for me, so no problem. Some day I will change the GTX980, but as Ses said above, I am still amortizing that card cost which I bought just three years ago. Nevertheless the HW advice is always to buy the best you can. I will be watching this thread with interest, but sometime I wonder if the developer just make the option available to start a graphic card (buy) arm race. June 29, 20178 yr Author Hi all I started this thread and a few of you were looking to take the plunge from a 970 to a 1070 and asked me to report back so you could all convince your missus to part with some cash lol. For the record all I have done is swap out my old 970 for a 1070. I bought this one from scan.co.uk for £379.99. https://www.scan.co.uk/products/gigabyte-geforce-gtx-1070-mini-itx-oc-8gb-gddr5-vr-ready-graphics-card-1920-core-1531-mhz-gpu-1721-m My current rig is i7 4790k running at 4.4ghz with the auto turbo boost enabled in the BIOS / GTX 1070 8GB and 16GB Ram. I went for a mini variant because I have a small bitfenix case, slots in nice and easy and gives my case a little more room to breathe. As I stated originally the primary reason for upgrading to 1070 was the ability to run 4 x SSAA to cure the god awful shimmering I personally experienced running 2 x SSAA or less on my old 970. My native resolution is 1080P so I need some form of AA to cure shimmering. I've been messing about for weeks using combination settings in Nvidia Inspector with settings in the sim and the ONLY thing which reduced shimmering was 4 x SSAA. Problem is on my 970 my GPU usage was pegged at 99% most of the time due to lack of VRAM which introduced lag and stuttering. So I shelled out nearly 400 quid to fix this problem, aren't we simmers a crazy bunch! So far I only have the Real Air Turbine Duke and the A2A Comanche. I haven't been able to put the card through some serious tests with the PMDG 747 because I didn't own it in FSX (I'm a recent convert) either way I would need to purchase it again for P3D. I'm waiting on the 737 NGX and the beautiful Majestic Q400. So these are the settings I have sort of settled on with the 1070 My test bed has been flying around the dense SoCal region in the Real Air Turbine Duke v2 and the A2A Comanche. I have ORBX FTX Global, NA LC + SoCal region installed. Using ASP4 with ASCA for the weather engine running all textures at 512 DXT. The good news is I can happily run 4 x SSAA and my GPU usage now with the extra VRAM barely goes over 85% with heavy cloud cover. The not so good news is my frames haven't dramatically increased either. I'd say on average coming into heavy hitting airports like FSDT LAX, LatinVFR KSNA and KSAN I'm averaging around 20-25 FPS on short final. Saying that the sim is still smooth and those frames aren't that bad considering the heavy ORBX region I'm running. Once I've climbed out of the immediate area of the airport, say 5-10 miles out and reached a decent altitude my frames are 40-50. Quite how this is going to change with a PMDG aircraft I'm not so sure. I can peg back some of the settings a little like autogen density and maybe scale back to 2 x SSAA to improve performance at the expense of reintroducing shimmering. So for you guys on the fence about upgrading to a 1070 I would say go for it. Whilst my frames haven't increased massively, they have increased enough to make the sim feel a whole lot smoother compared to my 970 and best of all I can quite happily run 4 x SSAA and have virtually cured the dreaded shimmering. Sorry for the rather long post but I hope this is useful to some of you. Cheers Thomas Derbyshire
June 30, 20178 yr One thing I've learned over the years, is that if you can't jump up at least 2 spots on the "card tier" it's a wast of money and a great cause of disappointment. Find a site that offers a chart. Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-10700F CPU @ 2.90GHz (8 cores) Hyper on, Evga RTX 3060 12 Gig, 32 GB ram, Windows 11, P3D v6, and MSFS 2020 and a couple of SSD's

While this logic seems sound, I'm not sure I'd agree in this circumstance. This is more than just "another iteration" of the sim... 64 bit definitely changes the game. Anything that brings better performance (whether it be FPS or eye candy) is a good choice at this point. And many of us will need to modify our rig to work better with a 64 bit sim. Thanks Thomas for the report Greg
