Night over Munich with Black Marble Part 2

Featured Replies

The one I think really had it down well out of all the night lighting effects in flight sims, either by default or as an add-on, was Night Environment when bloom was turned up, that one really does look a lot like the real thing.

I can recall taking a 'mental photograph' when coming over my home town looking out of the window of a 737 which was breaking through the clouds at night at approximately 1,200 feet AGL whilst on final to 23 right at Manchester. and I did that for just this very reason, i.e. so that I could compare what one sees in a flight sim. That is just about the point where one passes over my old home which is near to three reservoirs, so I knew exactly what was below me at that point I noted the exact appearance. That mental picture is one of the things I use to judge any night lighting in a flight sim because I know exactly what I could and could not see on that occasion out of what was actually there, and as I say, Night Environment with bloom on was pretty much exactly what it looked like.

Similarly, I can recall many occasions where I've been up at cruise altitude in an airliner over the ocean clear of any clouds. On such occasions you can quite clearly see ferries, cruisers and freighters lit up on the water and even make out their wakes. They appear to have a slight greenish tinge to their deck lighting when viewed from that height and in spite of the distance one is away from them, they stand out like crazy from the blackness of the surrounding water, even though you are viewing them from perhaps 30-40,000 feet away. I'd like to see someone pull that look off in a flight sim.

I'd like to see road signs and advertisement signs as well.  I do agree with you about the bloom which I run pretty high day and night to at least kind of simulate atmospheric blur effect.

I had to split you second set of pics into a new topic as subsequent screen shots are not allowed after a post has been started.
