April 8, 200620 yr Hi,The old thread is getting so long I can't find anything anymore; so can we start posting to this one? Here is my Chek Lap Kok before the airport was built. The island in the foreground is Chek Lap Kok, and the little island in the background is Lam Chau (where NDB "LC" is located).http://www.calclassic.com/Temp/vhhh.jpgThere is no elevation to the islands (I don't know how to do terrain except one point at a time - no thanks), but I think it's not that obvious on such small ones. Chek Lap Kok airport does not show up in the ATC Nearest Airport lists, BTW.If Jim decides to leave CLK alone in his scenery I guess I could upload this as an addon (in addition to having it in my 1963 version).Hope this helps,--Tom GibsonCal Classic Propliner Page: http://www.calclassic.comFreeflight Design Shop: http://www.freeflightdesign.comDrop by! ___x_x_(")_x_x___ Tom Gibson CalClassic Propliner Page
April 9, 200620 yr WOW looks great even without the elevation! Its incredible to think that there is an airport there now, and how much material was moved and brought in to create the island for CLK. Alaister Kay
April 9, 200620 yr Great work ! It would be great to have it available as download for the already existing VHHX sceneries, such as Kai Tak in the forties.Ciao, Peter
April 9, 200620 yr Love your work! Yeah it's a bit wierd making your approach to kai Tak with Chep under you. Regards, Max (YSSY) i7-12700K | Corsair Vengeance LPX 64GB 3600MHz DDR4 | Gigabyte RTX4090 24Gb | Gigabyte Z690 AORUS ELITE DDR4 | Corsair HX1200 PSU
April 9, 200620 yr That's excellent, Tom, really good. I'm digging for pics circa 1963 ...MarkMark "Dark Moment" BeaumontVP Fleet, DC-3 AirwaysTeam Member, MAAM-SIM[a href=http://www.swiremariners.com/cathayhk.html" target="_blank]http://www.paxship.com/maamlogo2.jpg[/a] _________________________ Mark "Dark Moment" Beaumont VP Fleet, DC-3 Airways Team Member, MAAM-SIM
April 10, 200620 yr I'm in regular touch with one of Cathay Pacific's founding pilots who now flies his beloved "Betsy" in flightsim and is helping me extensively with my FS2004 project for her. For "Betsy" he uses Alex Nicolson's 1940s scenery now, of course, but for later stuff he uses more modern renditions or, indeed, FS98! He comments as follows, and makes a very good point:"Appreciate your keeping me in touch with the prospective new Kai Tak scenery. I hope whatever the result the curved light guides are clearer - that is a vital part of the entire exercise. Strangely FS98's was as clear as a bell." The light guides are vital, indeed, to a successful and capable approach in FS. Firstly, because we have so little spatial awareness to the right on the turn, when using 2D panels at least; secondly, because visibility is often poor but these lights shine in the gloom, or should.Point taken, Jim and Tom? A valid observation, I think.MarkMark "Dark Moment" BeaumontVP Fleet, DC-3 AirwaysTeam Member, MAAM-SIM[a href=http://www.swiremariners.com/cathayhk.html" target="_blank]http://www.paxship.com/maamlogo2.jpg[/a] _________________________ Mark "Dark Moment" Beaumont VP Fleet, DC-3 Airways Team Member, MAAM-SIM
April 10, 200620 yr Author Hi,Currently there are none. We need to know two things - what did they look like, and what was their exact placement (i.e. overhead drawing of the airport with them marked).Take care,--Tom GibsonCal Classic Propliner Page: http://www.calclassic.comFreeflight Design Shop: http://www.freeflightdesign.comDrop by! ___x_x_(")_x_x___ Tom Gibson CalClassic Propliner Page
April 12, 200620 yr I'm really glad someone is tackling old Kai Tak again! Looking forward to this project being released. I flew into Kai Tak a few times and spent many hours in the tower watching the movements (my Dad was an ATCO and taught alot of the controllers here in the UK)...keep up the good work and can't wait. BTW does anyone know if there is a vintage CPA virtual airline???Stan (EGPE)
April 12, 200620 yr I realize the curved approach lights were a part of the IGS 13. I have the light schematic but have not found a good way to add them to the ground in FS9 wiithout an increase in Frame rates. There have been curved approach lighting in previous version of FS but FS9 left them all out (example KJFK).I would like to release what I have finished but these are areas that would possibly have to be in update.Tom has found a few things that I did not consider and passed the info on to me. Adding those tweaks has pushed my release date back a small amount.
April 12, 200620 yr The commercial Flightsoft Hong Kong scenery has lights on top of some of the buildings between the stadium and the airport. This is probably similar to how it was in real life due to the amount of buildings. Since those buildings may not be in the scenery as yet but could be added later by whoever, any lights on the ground would no longer be seen.Just something maybe to consider for future planning and possible updates.
April 12, 200620 yr > BTW does anyone know if there is a vintage CPA virtual>airline???There is not. But I have considered it myself. Although CPA Virtual showcases the older planes on their site, you can't take 'the old days' seriously in parallel with 1. the existence of CLK and 2. those things without propellors that resemble Cuban cigar cases.A vintage CPA would fly DC-3, DC-4, DC-6 and L-188. That's the props. If you were to consider jets at all, then the Convair 880 and Boeing 707 were the first, followed by the Boeing 747-200 and Lockheed L-1011 Tristar, in tandem for several years the backbone of the fleet. Then came all those far more modern long thin things (and fatter 74s) and the airport that even my grandmother could find in a fog.OK ... so if there was a "Kai Tak Virtual" (for it is she) where would we draw the line?I already know Tom's answer :)MarkMark "Dark Moment" BeaumontVP Fleet, DC-3 AirwaysTeam Member, MAAM-SIM[a href=http://www.swiremariners.com/cathayhk.html" target="_blank]http://www.paxship.com/maamlogo2.jpg[/a] _________________________ Mark "Dark Moment" Beaumont VP Fleet, DC-3 Airways Team Member, MAAM-SIM
April 13, 200620 yr Commercial Member Just thinking off the top of my head try something a bit different. Sort of like an "Emma's Field" but for Kai Tak. Maybe have it under the banner of Kai Tak Vitural or the "Kai Tak Club" ;). And under that, have it broken into Props and Jets. And all airlines that flew into there would be welcomed.Guess that would be more of social club than a strict VA. Like I said.. just an idea. Intel i9-12900KF, Asus Prime Z690-A MB, 64GB DDR5 6000 RAM, (3) SK hynix M.2 SSD (2TB ea.), 16TB Seagate HDD, Gigabyte GeForce 5080 RTX, Corsair iCUE H70i AIO Liquid Cooler, UHD/Blu-ray Player/Burner (still have lots of CDs, DVDs!) Windows 10, (hold off for now on Win11), EVGA 1300W PSUNetgear 1Gbps modem & router, (3) 27" 1440 wrap-around displaysFull array of Bravo, Saitek and GoFlight hardware for the cockpit. Varjo and HP VR headsets for mixed reality.

April 13, 200620 yr Author LOL!Well yes, I will only be flying propliners into Kai Tak for the forseeable future, but I think the early jets look really cool making the turn to Rwy 13. If I were doing a Kai Tak VA, it would include all aircraft that flew into that airport. It would be broken into sections, as determined by the time period(s) of the sceneries available. Since (at the moment) that is:1. 40's scenery2. 1960's scenery (coming soon)3. Modern scenery (Thomas', payware, and Jim Vile's coming soon)that would be my breakdown.Take care,--Tom GibsonCal Classic Propliner Page: http://www.calclassic.comFreeflight Design Shop: http://www.freeflightdesign.comDrop by! ___x_x_(")_x_x___ Tom Gibson CalClassic Propliner Page
April 17, 200620 yr My plans are to release FS9 default Kai Tak toward the end of this week!!!!There are still additional scenery areas that I would like to tweak but will never get the project uploaded if I don't stop tinkering. Thanks to Tom Gibson (see picture above) there is also an option to completely remove VHHH or leave it in the Hong Kong area.Holger Sandmann has created a SRTM3 LOD10 that will be included and also the SRTM on Mark's Kai Tak web site is compatible.Thomas Kwong's November 2004 VHHH2005b scenery is compatible if you use it and also want to keep VHHH open. MRAI FP's are included that were for VHHX (1998 Kai Tak) so your AI Traffic will come alive and fly the IGS 13 approach toward the Checkerboard and a turn to final.User Aircraft can also request the IGS 13 from ATC (based on winds) but also included are all the Transistions as per approach charts for the IGS/VOR/NDB RWY 13. When locked to the GPS receiver/NAV the autopilot will fly the various approaches, holding patterns, published missed approach for you if help is needed. Runway 13 gets most of the attention but all 4 quadrant Transistions to ILS 31/published missed approach are included. Many people have requested different areas of scenery and I have tried to add those if FS9 has them in their default Library. At the present time I think it is best to release what has been completed and then update future request if something needs to be added/deleted. I am still looking for a good set of buildings/billboards for the rightside of RWY 13 so they will not be in the original upload except for new GA buildings.
