I have seen the topic before, but meh :-)Havn't done a long haul for awhileLast one was at the start of the year in a 747 from MEL-SIN non stop.I remember doing the infamous gatwick-orilando flight. I usually start very early like 8AM then go out for the day hoping the computer does not overheat or cause a fire!!!Today i did a short 3 hour flight, so i watched the news and surf the net...

1/ avoid them like the plague2/ kick back and chill to music tv or whatever till it's time to descend.3/ come back to find that FS has crashed altogether.or 4/ find I missed something vital and it's now halfway into the flight with no time left to start again.LOL

I like to do the occasional long-haul, maybe twice a month. Typically anywhere from 8 (JFK/EWR-EDDF)to 12 hours (EGLL-KSFO, KJFK-LHBP,EHAM-St.Marteen). During the thing, I'll watch a movie, read a book, or do my hw. Homework pairs great with FS!! You do it for about a half hour or so, and when u get utterly bored just check a few things on the FMC, snap a few screens, and bam ur ready for hw again. Sometimes I sleep (bad i know) but hey its really satisfying to land a big haul at the end!

Use time acceleration, since the most exciting part of the flight is the takeoff and landing. If you "watch a movie, read or surf, or go out for the day, or kick back and chill to music tv or whatever till it's time to descend, or clean the house, buy groceries, do the laundry, cook lunch, or practice piano" what is the point??? Guess what? You are not *really* doing a "long haul." Some of you people really crack me up. And I'll bet that some of you have complained about something in FS and stated that it's not "as real as it gets."

So there. :( I suppose you could take some old fashioned big iron and sit there reprogramming the INS all the time and manually calculate step climb every few minutes. But other than that, there is no real purpose in sitting in front of the computer for 10 hours and ruining your eyes while the plane is on autopilot. http://www.commerciallevel.com/base/suppor...46supporter.jpg

Getting prepared for my wife to come into the room, funny she seems to have this extra sense lol.. when im not doing anything she always finds something for me to do

I am like others..good way to get stuff around the house done while over the Atlantic or Pacific. Whats funny is I can go an entire 9 hour flight but the minute I click of the AP and take her manually for landing..the girlfriend rings on the telephone. Luckly she understands! Conversation goes like this:Girlfriend: Whaddya doing?Me: I'm on finalsGF: ok,call me backMe: okclick.Eric

Zzzzz, Zzzzzz, Zzzzz :)Or go out to watch real aircraft for a few hours, get the shopping done, and whatnot. But I ever more fly aircraft requiring active pilot participation for the entire flight, and limit duration to under 3 hours.

Personally I happen to be a very lucky guy. First off I am a long haul enthusiast, R/W routes using the 74 76 or 77. It might only be a sim but to me it is more rewarding to actually do my flights in real time. Now the lucky part. For the most part I have a home office, the FS setup is right next to the work setup on perpendicular desks. I usually wake up, do my pre-flight and departure before my workday begins. Then while I am working all day, have to be in front of the computer anyway I am happily flying along seeing the world. After work is done I will just look to the right (my laptop is on the left) and I am right back at the controls. Now one day I was on the phone with IBM when my 744 had a failure mid-flight. Sadly to say work comes first and a lot of people perished that day...In any case, I am very fortunate, I get to sit next to my FS setup while I work... I don't really like leaving the computer's sight if I am on a long haul. I use FsPassengers with auto-submit so I like to make sure everyone is happy ;)To each their own and as long as you enjoy it, who cares :)-PaulLiquid CooledAMD 4000 San Diego Overclocked to 2750 FX 56 1/22 Gigs Kingston Corsair XMS PC3500 @ 500Dual 7800 GTX 24 inch widescreen dual 19 inch LCDRaid-0psolksig.jpg

So, using time acceleration is more "real" than watching a movie? Or Reading a book? Ever been in a RW cockpit on a 5+ hour flight?Doug

monitor the instruments, listen to ATC, enjoy the view, read a book, do laundry and clean, make food, read the paper. minus the cleaning and laundry basically the same things real long haul pilots do. I dont dare touch the time acceleration, it just ruins the realism for me.
