How much is too much

Featured Replies

I think John is spot on, like anything else there is a great deal of marketing and PR that goes into marketing to the FS communities. Some developers pay certain sites for premium banners and news etc... This leaves those who don't pay at a loss on certain sites. Obviously that PR money gets written into the cost of the product.Like you said, inflate it to make everyone think it is the greatest thing since sliced bread and then drop it down so everyone thinks it is a bargain. As for me, I have nothing against any company at all. Like I said, fo rme my personal cap is probably around $60 for a single add-on but that is just me. I go on a gauge of what other developers are doing and rate the value. If products like ASV which revolutionize all of FS and UT which replaces massive regions at a time and then as I mentioned LVL-D and PMDG which produce some of the best add-ons under the sun can still manage to keep their prices managable to "most" simmers, what makes these other developers who are so far askew such a better value add. If someone can tell me that I would probably buy it too LOL... But without that huge value add then it makes no sense to me.Just my .02Thanks for bringing me back John,-PaulLiquid CooledAMD 4000 San Diego2 Gigs Kingston Corsair XMS CL2Dual 7800 GTX 24 inch widescreen dual 19 inch LCDRaid-0psolksig.jpg

You don't buy payware, fine for you, but some of us wan't the best stuff and most of it is payware. Software in general is way overpriced (600 bucks for photoshop? 300$ for XP Pro,nuts). Up to now software for FS was among the most reasonably priced software around but the trend is changing and the above mentioned company is the best example of this trend. FS software should not be only for the rich. Having said that, recent freeware releases are getting better and better closer to payware quality (ie VOZ). As for the Ariane, yes I said the name, I havent bought it yet, but I am a sucker for good payware and I hear it is the best NG around if you can get through the activation process (see other posts)so one of these days I just might.

Me personally I do buy payware, about $3000 worth of it LOL. I am all for supporting payware, without them FS would not be half of what it is today. I think someone else mentioned they don't buy it earlier, to each their own... My fs install is over 40 gigs LOL. Agreed on the freeware thing too, with projects like FreeFlow and VOZ they really are pushing the payware barrier. It is amazing some of the freeware being released these days. VHHH for example rivals a lot of payware out there. We are lucky to have developers like this. I am sucker for a good payware too but is it really better than twice as good as the PMDG? That is my whole point, where is the plane (experience the pun) when it comes to pricing. OBVIOUSLY it is each companies own choice but if you are going to be that expensive then it better be revolutionary IMHO. Otherwise simmers really are going to "drive" the price of add-ons into the hundreds of dollars per add-on when others realize we are paying over twice what they charge for comparable products they are only going to follow suit. Do we really want that to happen?-PaulLiquid CooledAMD 4000 San Diego2 Gigs Kingston Corsair XMS CL2Dual 7800 GTX 24 inch widescreen dual 19 inch LCDRaid-0psolksig.jpg

>If you don't like the price you simply don't buy it...period.>Coming onto the forums and complaining about it, when everyone>knows who you are talking about, is just a sneaky way of>getting a sideways shot in at that company. >>How sickening. What is sickening is the free advertising "they" get on a weekly basis. My hunch is that every time "they" are the topic of a thread, someone heads over and buys an airplane from "them". The purchaser being comfy (for awhile) that no company can be that bad. :) Bob...

No price is too much... All prices are fair as far as the market place is concerned. Its priced too much or fairly priced only for the individual who makes such normative judgement for himself/herself.Take the PMDG 747 for e.g. 1. A user who loves eye candy only..but is not interested in spending time and learning the systems (FMC and MCP) etc... may find the price set too high. For them..this aircraft is the wrong purchase. 2. A user who spends $20,000 for home built cockpit, this is a bargain. Have you seen the extent some folks go to in getting this addiction fix?3. A User who uses this aircraft to learn the systems and spend a lot of time with it entertaining himself..may find it fairly priced. As far as presenting a false sense of value..and invidiuals finding out after a purchase.. Well!. then they need to visit AVSIM forum more often and be well informed. :)Manny

I feel the same way about gas prices. How much is too much for a tank of gas for your car.... :) Thats for another forum though....Kevin

software in general is NOT overpriced. If you knew the cost of creating it you'd not think it was, especially considering the additional cost over lifetime of a product.Sure PS or XP are not cheap, but that's one expensive group of people Adobe or Microsoft needs to feed in order to keep supporting and developing those products.FS addons are a steal, helped along no small deal by the fact that most people creating them don't have to make a living doing so and only want to see (part of) the investment returned.

that's economy. What's the return on investment :)When it gets to the point where it's cheaper to sit at home with no income than to fill up the car...

Know what Edam.....I don't have any idea what company is being discussed..!! :-)Rob A

Actually, what's sickening to me is how some companies feel they can rip people off. You are WAY overreacting. Get over it.James

Hi!Thanks for sharing your opinion. I'd LOVE to know which company you're referring to. The whole over-sensitivity people have about naming companies that are clearly ripping people off does annoy me sometimes. Free speech is a right.James

lets say their name rymes with "a train" and leave it at that ;-)

How about taking the question in the opposite direction. Instead of asking how much is too much for and addon, how much is too little? Have you ever come across an payware and say somthing like "$1.99 USD! It must be junk if it's so cheap". And then pass on it. Or if the addon was just a couple of bucks it was deemed to be more of a hassle to go through paypay or dig out your credit card and retype in all that information? Just food for thought..

>You don't buy payware, fine for you, but some of us want the>best stuff and most of it is payware.Fine! I'd like a Ferrari but I can't afford one so I make do with my Toyota. :-) #### about the price of the Ferrari isn't going to achieve anything, so long as there are multi-millionaires willing to queue for 2 years to get one at the current price.

On that one, you gotta chill out! This is a discussion forum, and the poster offered his view up for discussion. I, for one, agree with him, but as you can see, instead of flaming any developer on the forum, I offered up to discuss it with him via e-mail. As far as getting a sideways shot in, everyone is entitled to an opinion about a company, and no 'sideways' approach is needed. If I can't stand someone's tactics, I am entitled to let my opinion be heard. The reason why I flat out didn't say anything to support him is to save the mods the time and effort of having to lock another thread. Nothing sickening about it. The poster was decent enough not to name the company. Those that know about 'who he's talking about' already have formed their opinions, and very little can sway them. Those that don't... well, that's self-explanatory: if you don't know who he's talking about, it ain't going matter to you.Couldn't have said it better myself.
