Another problem is that what is regard as access to your system is simple achievable by a cheap trojan via malicious content, link, attachment or similar attacks. Simbol Just like Intel's reaction to this vulnerability that has been around for a long time, Mozilla can't afford to be seen not to be doing anything about it. Again, they have to allow for the lowest common denominator - the user who has no system protection. Most antivirus apps should prevent malicious scripts running in a browser (Bitdefender certainly does) and, additionally, any links and downloads are scanned when clicked. i7-14700k | Asus ROG STRIX Z790-F Gaming WIFI | 32GB DDR5 RAM | MSI RTX 4080 Super | WD Black SN850X 1TB & 2TB | Corsair HX1000i ATX3.0 | MSI MAG401QR 40" monitor | Win 11 Pro 64-bit | Meta Quest 3
January 5, 20188 yr Apple have admitted all MAC`s Phone`s and Pad`s will need to be updated, Spectre is a bigger problem as it affects all chip`s including the one`s coming off the production line now, A Rethink in the design will be needed, What this will mean in future performance of new CPU`s we will have to wait and see. The update will be: KB4054022 Haswell and newer CPU's will receive a smaller performance hit. The higher end the CPU the less it will be affected. So worst hit will be older than Haswell and lower end CPU's. According to Jayz2cents, it's believed that the patch for this will point hackers in the right direction. They may well then try to reverse engineer the patch to get in. It would appear that update was released on 8th December 2017.

January 5, 20188 yr I still haven't received the fix from MS as far as I can tell. I'm using Avast which already confirmed they're already supporting the new fix and I even checked I have the correct entry in the registry confirming this. Still, when I check for new updates I get nothing. Anyone else also using Avast had any better luck?
January 5, 20188 yr Defender here, no issues as you would expect being an MS AV... but Ai Suite 3 fails to run post patch.
January 5, 20188 yr A follow-up on my last post. Apparently I'm not the only Avast user still waiting for the fix -> https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=212691.0

Wait - As you will have read in the earlier posts all brands of CPU are affected to varying degrees. A new design Intel CPU is estimated to be a year away at this time. It is way to early. The rule is to be careful about what sites you go to and don't download anything unless you and the AV software you are using is absolutely sure the item is safe. The software and firmware updates coming over the next week/s will mitigate the risk. A.Chryss - near YSCB 1. January 6, 20188 yr Knowing the scale of the problem is one thing (someone mentioned it was identified back in June - partially correct) however that knowledge only alerts me to the severity of the problem most exploit fixes by AV and software companies have a cycle of under 1 month from alert status (excluding known and active hack alerts). The other aspect is that Intel have stated existing CPUs will be affected to different degrees. Many people posting on this issue have looked at it purely from their desktop/ home use of the net and computers. The downside for the sites we visit and the cloud itself/ database managers is much much larger and potentially even more disruptive to our home activities if some black hat produces a working exploit in the cloud. I certainly would wait and live with what you have until the situation has a clear outcome. A.Chryss - near YSCB 1. But if one security infrastructure is in place the risk will be low. the performance implications are the more damaging worry for servers, especially virtualization which most are. cheers, Rob
January 6, 20188 yr https://wccftech.com/intel-patch-meltdown-spectre/?utm_source=traqli&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=1722 Quote Apple, Google, Microsoft, Amazon Measure No Significant Performance Degradation For Vast Majority Of Use-Cases Quote Soon after the initial PR, Intel also rolled out statements from 4 of its biggest clients, namely Google, Amazon, Apple and Microsoft, all 4 of whom have stated that they are witnessing little to no impact on the vast majority of their cloud workloads. This still means that there will be significant performance impact on a small minority of use cases, but so far things are starting to look good for the industry in general.
January 8, 20188 yr Hi all. Knowing the risks, I used O&O ShutUp10 to stop updates (Windows 10 Home) for a few days until we understand more re: degraded performance, yet not many recent posts re: observations here. Anybody seeing material performance changes post Windows and BIOS updates? This article also suggests not crippling. https://www.techspot.com/article/1556-meltdown-and-spectre-cpu-performance-windows/

Big test on performance is when the microcode update comes possibly tomorrow. Plenty of info in the P3D forum A.Chryss - near YSCB 1.
