Backcourse landing problems

Featured Replies

I was wondering if anyone has a solution why the plane turns away (737-800 NGX WL) at a Backcourse ILS landing.

Everything seems to be going well, however, just before the touchdown the plane turns (sometimes left, sometimes right) away from the runway, so that it ends up next to it.

This happens even if I switch off the a / p and autothrotlle just before touchdown and when I have selected fair weather.

Thanks in advance!

Regards Edward.

So you say it makes a turn with autopilot already off?

By most SOP you must turn autopilot off not sooner than MDA minus 50'. Especially it's important for backcourse approach, when you have to overfly localizer, at this point signal is lost, because LOC doesn't beam upwards (maybe there is some protection in real autopilot, which willl force the plane to keep wings level). "Just before the touchdown" AP disengagement will be right in this zone, so fly manually earlier. IIRC NGX is disengaging autopilot automatically at 100RA for IAN approch, which is also too late.

Have flown BC approach many times, the only problem I don't have FD's. Ryan said they fixed the bug in 2012, hopefully we'll get the update someday.

Well of course it does.  On a backcourse approach the ILS antenna is at the approach end of the runway often at least 100 feet from threshold.  As others have pointed out, you should be manually flying below minimums as published.  My only question is where is this approach?  I am not aware of any backcourse ILS approaches remaining in the US.  They are all gone.

Goodness, as many times as I've flow into there.... had always been VMC; well, there was an IMC departure from Brownsville years ago in a Piper Arrow that suffered complete electrical failure when I pulled the gear switch up.  That was interesting.  Anyway... good catch Jim.  KHRL LOC/BC 35L mins 420.  I'd like to point out the RNV Y 35L has mins of 286 so the BC remains an oxymoron.

Roger, that.  It's a definite curiosity.

There are still a lot of airplanes out there without RNAV capability.

Are you doing this in LNAV/VNAV?

I navigate to the airport with VNAV/LNAV, but about 6 NM before I switch to the App mode.

Today I tried another scenery for EHRD and change the course some degrees but it has no effect :-(

There is your problem.  The 737NG can't fly a BC using approach mode.  You need to fly it in LNAV.

Ok really? In my PFD the message Backcourse appears when I push the APP button at the approach.

But I will give it another try with VNAV/LNAV.

I’ll let you know. Thanks!

It's possible it's a Boeing option but if so I've never seen any reference to it.  I know our airplanes can't do it.
