July 15, 20187 yr Ran some testing this afternoon, figure I'd share my results. The Concorde is a pig. Testing: Only thing that changed were the planes. Simple looking out the cockpit window sitting at Gate G14 at a loaded Miami City X KMIA with high FSX settings.
July 15, 20187 yr A better unit (MB or GB) would make these charts way easier to read. And it's quite surprising how well the 727 does in the memory department. 7950X3D + 7900 XT + 64 GB + Linux | 4800H + RTX2060 + 32 GB + Linux My add-ons from my FS9/FSX days
July 15, 20187 yr Although this is nothing like as scientific as VeryBumpy's data, over the years every time I add a new aircraft to FSX, I have evaluated its performance in some detail and seeing this thread, I thought the information I have recorded on VAS usage might be of interest to FSX users. My method of assessing VAS usage is by comparing the VAS footprint of the test aircraft to that of the default Baron. Basically I carry out this test by starting FSX using the default Baron in VC view with the engines running at a certain position on the runway at the same airport every time (with clear weather) and I note the VAS usage as monitored by FSUIPC. I then change aircraft to the one I am testing, make sure I can see the whole of the captain's side of the instrument panel (usually involves zooming out once or twice) but otherwise do not alter the view and I wait until the FSUIPC VAS reading has been stable for about 90 seconds before I note the new VAS usage. I then compare the VAS reading of the test aircraft with that previously taken from the default Baron and see how many additional MB of VAS the new aircraft is using. It's a bit of a crude assessment but I have listed the results below for all the addon aircraft I have tested in FSX over the years with the numbers representing the VAS usage in MB over and above that of the default Baron. I have rechecked some of the more obvious outliers and overall I think the figures give a reasonably accurate estimate of VAS usage for individual addon aircraft. The addons with very high and very low additional VAS footprints are perhaps predictable and in many cases reflect factors such as complex systems or the use of HD textures but there are a few surprises in there! Of course as soon as you start using many of these aircraft and perhaps opening additional windows you will find the VAS usage increases and certainly the addons with the heavier VAS footprints may need to be used with caution when combined with VAS intensive scenery/airports. As you can see I have a particularly serious addon addiction problem although in my defence many of these addons, particularly ones replaced by better quality versions, now reside in my virtual boneyard! Bill Just to explain my comment, when I looked at this forum on my iPad last night the list that I had posted appeared somewhat jumbled, but when I rechecked the thread on my PC this morning, the list looks fine, so I guess I don't need to salvage it after all! July 17, 20187 yr Author For me, it appears that DX10 is a definite reduction in VAS usage. This is with ConcordeX.
July 17, 20187 yr Nice data! Looks like you’re saving an average of around 200MB of VAS in those two airports by using DX10 if I’ve interpreted the scale on the left hand axis correctly? Bill
July 17, 20187 yr DX9 keeps a copy of the video RAM stuff in the program's virtual memory and DX10 doesn't. (Or something like that.) 7950X3D + 7900 XT + 64 GB + Linux | 4800H + RTX2060 + 32 GB + Linux My add-ons from my FS9/FSX days
