How much space will I need...

All of you young "whippersnappers" and your floppy dice and HDD. I worked on a billing and accounting system that had 4K of program memory and 1  and 1/2 K of data memory.  Core memory...little doughnuts with a wire going through it.

Boy, does that ever bring back memories. The first program I ever "wrote" was a bunch of wires plugged into a board on a 1620. It's really important to remember, though, that 64K of memory is all anybody will ever need...now if I could just remember who said that...😁

Wasn't Bill Gates the one who said that 640 kB should be enough for anybody?

I couldn't care less how much hard disk space is required.

I'm taking a screenshot of this ... so I can remind you ... it'll be a long time before you see PR resolution as good as you'll see LC on a global level ... the quest for higher resolution scenery will continue just like the quest for more RAM, more permanent storage, etc. etc. ... Bring up Google Earth and AF2, compare the resolution over any given spot in the Netherlands ... you'll see what you're missing.  Nothing negative towards Orbx Netherlands, they're living within the practicality of hardware and storage and distribution (some people taking days to just download this small area of 72GB).

Yes I believe that is correct, but he said 1MB should be enough ... remember 640KB was what was left over after the devices were mapped into "upper memory" ... anyone recall Quarterdesk memory manager (QEMM) that would let you map more stuff in "upper memory" so as to free up the 640KB limit ... OOMs go back a long way 🙂

Cheers, Rob.

Yes, but I do not need the entire globe. I would rather have a small chunk of it in high resolution photoscenery than all of it in landclass

You win the prize Luis. It was, indeed, Bill Gates. And you're also right about the amount...he did say 640K, not 64K (my bad)..........Doug

I remember pencils, pencil sharpeners, a tablet, and an abacus.

Heck Noel, I thought you were old enough to remember using a hard rock to scratch animal pictures on the cave walls..................

Well, this idiot (me) bought the first pocket calculator, Singer-1234 for a mere $85 back in 1974.  I worked for Singer Business Machines Friden Division.  Still fermenting in my dresser drawer. Supposedly, we got a bargain on it???

Just going to run a Chromebook and not upgrade to a Windows computer. Too many problems with the new Sims! 😱
Trying to keep peace and harmony and the will of Landru on the site seems to be a full time job!

Yes Rob, I remember it well. I used QEMM and LANtastic to network 24 386 boxes for a 24 node PCBoard BBS system back in the day.

What I find amazing is that LANtastic is still being used by organizations who need to network computers with wildly different operating systems!

Impressive!  We used it (required really) to network Falcon 3.0 (Spectrum Holobytes with a development studio out here in Alameda back in the 90's) to 4-6 other PCs (BNC) ... on a good day we got 4 PCs sync'd, on a bad day 2 PCs, on a miracle day 6 PCs.  We started the 510th group with "fly-ins" at the Dunfey Hotel in San Mateo ... just as it is today, I spent most of my time helping others getting their PCs working with Falcon, IRQ settings, address settings, QEMM configurations, etc. ... so much has changed and yet still the same.

Cheers, Rob.
