October 13, 20187 yr Yup, lots of incorrect facts on that video, and I'd actually contest that whilst it is true that 'any landing you can walk away from is a good one', that forced landing of the Yak was actually a pretty poor one with ultimately quite a bad choice of field given the option of other fields nearby which would have meant not hitting a dry stone wall. I'm glad the guy was okay, but it wasn't a great landing in comparison to one which would have been the result of some better choices he could have made. Moreover, the idea that pilots of single-engined aeroplanes and gliders - at least sensible ones that is - fly around at low altitude without thinking: 'what would I do know if the engine/lift failed right at this second?' is preposterous. Any half-decent pilot will always have a reasonably good idea of what they'd do at any given moment if they lost the ability to stay in the air, or if it was desirable to land quickly, and if they don't fly around with that plan in the back of their mind, or with sufficient altitude to make it a non-issue, then they are not a very intelligent pilot. Any landing - even an emergency one - should not be a complete surprise, but rather the subject of a plan, albeit sometimes a fairly swift one on occasion. October 13, 20187 yr Interesting video but not well narrated. "Front landing wheel locked in a horizontal position" should be "nose gear wheels locked 90 degrees sideways" Helicopter didn't likely just find the "tiny pontoon". Those looked like they were deployed by the helicopter itself along with a raft Flight 1549 took off from LaGuardia not JFK etc. Eric Anderson
October 13, 20187 yr The helicopter landed on a tiny pontoon? That is so ridiculous it's a shame. The skid floats were deployed. Normally helicopters that operate regularly over water have these installed for this very reason. Unbelievable the number of errors in this video. Thank you.
