August 15, 200619 yr As most people know the overcast flaw hasn't been fixed however with the new visibility options it can look alot better. (mutliple visibility layers) Hopefully Activesky will be able to utilize this by having a 1/16th mi vis at layers where overcast is reported. Here is two cloud layers (cumulous+stratus) with 1/16th mi vis in between:http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a276/Heber98/overcast4.jpghttp://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a276/Heber98/overcast3.jpgAlso similar but no cumulous whatsoever, only broken stratus with 1/16 mi vis just above and 10mi vis from the stratus to the surface:http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a276/Heber98/overcast6.jpgHere is something I like alot, transitioning out of haze. Clear on top, hazy below: Is it me or is this something we haven't been able to do?http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a276/Heb...visibility1.jpg-TrippSony VAIO P4 2.41GB PC2700 RAMRadeon 9550 128MB AGP
August 15, 200619 yr Commercial Member Yeah that last pic is definitely something we couldn't do before - thanks MS! Hopefully they can get a real 8/8 OVC working before release too, it'd be nice to have... Ryan MaziarzFor fastest support, please submit a ticket at http://support.precisionmanuals.com
August 15, 200619 yr What overcast flaw are your referring to? I was able to set up an overcast layer without using any visibility layers or anything else.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/154194.jpgJust a simple 2000 foot thick 8/8 overcast stratus layer. If this isn't the flaw that you are addressing, then I apologize. It just seems to me that FSX's overcast is light years ahead of FS9's.
August 15, 200619 yr Well I am open to suggestion but I haven't seen people posting overcast shots, not even MS. I would love to see more posts. This is what happens when I boost my weather settings to max. 2000ft overcast stratus layer (3000-5000),unlimited vis:http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a276/Heb...Clipboard01.jpgI am searching for images like what you posted and haven't found them. So can you see the ground when you look down through your layer?-TrippSony VAIO P4 2.41GB PC2700 RAMRadeon 9550 128MB AGP
August 15, 200619 yr Man, I know this is slightly different, but have you seen the "Fogged In" preset? That's pretty awesome/
August 15, 200619 yr Hi,Have you maxed out the clouds slider in Options/Settings?Hope this helps,--Tom GibsonCal Classic Propliner Page: http://www.calclassic.comFreeflight Design Shop: http://www.freeflightdesign.comDrop by! ___x_x_(")_x_x___ Tom Gibson CalClassic Propliner Page
August 16, 200619 yr Heber98 - thats the same thing I get with 8/8 stratus (2000' thick).I have to add a visibility layer to make it overcast. I've also hadluck with tall cumulus clouds and then using a visiblity layer(or 2)to change the 'lightness' of the clouds.jcmissionary - I would love to be able to get that with 8/8 stratus. What kind of system do you have?(specs) | Dave | I've been around for most of my life. There's always a sunset happening somewhere in the world that somebody is enjoying.
August 16, 200619 yr Mine is moderate for this day and age. Athlon64 3500+1GB RAMRadeon 9800 ProHere are some more with a cumulus layer from 2000 to 13000 feet. Again, I used no visibility layers or any such workaround. This was created simply by creating a cloud layer, selecting overcast 8/8 and adjusting the layer size.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/154198.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/154199.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/154200.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/154201.jpgI also included the top-down pic to show that overcast is solid. The only fault I found with it was that the scenery objects were visible through the clouds, with some kind of strange glow. I would imagine that this will get fixed before FSX is released.
August 16, 200619 yr I think FSX has got this problem solved.I flew past an overcast layer...constantly looking to back to see the runway clear up. Nope. It never did.manny Manny Beta tester for SIMStarter
August 16, 200619 yr >I think FSX has got this problem solved. No, no, I'm sure it hasn't. After all, I read that on the Internet! ;)
August 16, 200619 yr Did a little testing tonite...and it *can* be done, although you have to combine an 8/8 layer with a 1/16 visibility layer. I think that's cheating.Rhett Rhett 7800X3D ♣ 96 GB G.Skill Flare ♣ Gigabyte 4090 ♣ Crucial P5 Plus 2TB
August 16, 200619 yr Adding the visibility layers to the overcast layers works until you get to a higher altitude. The visibility layer seems to only extend so far around the position of your plane. Beyond that you can still see through the "overcast"...see pic which is at FL250. Not as big of a deal as when you're on top of it though.Keith
August 16, 200619 yr Ummmm... I've managed to do without using visibility layers. Seems to work just fine.
August 16, 200619 yr Rhett-That's exactly what I have done in my first 3 shots at the top of the post.- - - - - I've been thinking about it and I don't think flightsim can display visibility so that it stays within the borders of the weather station area. If you have an overcast front to the east, clear skys to the west, and you use a small visibility layer to "white out" the overcast then the visibility layer will make the overcast appear to cover the whole sky instead of just where the front is.For example - This type of front wouldn't be possible if using a 1/16mi vis layer to help overcast:http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a276/Heb.../cloudfront.jpgI haven't experimented enough yet, but I'm pretty sure the visibility trick would decrease realism in many cases.-Tripp
August 16, 200619 yr Could you post some screenshots of your display settings? I would like to find out what setting affects the overcast of FSX. There is obviously something different between your settings and mine, because I can consistenly generate overcast layers like those shown in my previous posts. Would be nice to narrow down what that difference is. :-)
