May 31, 200620 yr The advancement of computer hardware since the release of Flight Simulator 2004: "A Century of Flight" has been pretty dramatic. We're at the point now where 64-bit processors are becoming widely available. AMD has their AMD64 brand and their competitor, Intel has their EM64T enabled processors. There are already a few games which take advantage of the new 64-bit processor power. Among them are Far Cry (available via a 64-bit patch) and Half-Life 2 which includes a 64-bit version directly from SteamPowered.com.My question is will there be a 64-bit version of FSX? If so, then will FSX ship with 32-bit and 64-bit versions in the same box or will 64-bit versions be sold seperately from the 32-bit counterparts? Or as an alternative, would a 64-bit patch be made available to upgrade a 32-bit version to a 64-bit version such as what Ubisoft did with Far Cry?Simply put, I would very much like to see a 64-bit version of FSX.
May 31, 200620 yr Commercial Member I don't think there's enough 64bit owners out there to make this a financially feasable approach.64bit just isn't catching on as fast as 32bit did. Ed Wilson Mindstar AviationMy Playland - I69
May 31, 200620 yr I believe that it was already stated by the MS team that there will not be a 64 bit version of FSX.My apologies if I am wrong.Regards,http://www.dreamfleet2000.com/gfx/images/F...R_FORUM_LOU.jpg
May 31, 200620 yr The only way to get a 64-bit version of FSX will be to buy two copies.(Does anyone appreciate by humor anymore...)
May 31, 200620 yr > I don't think there's enough 64bit owners out there to make this a financially feasable approach. In between now and FS11 most users will be using 64bit. We should be able to install 64 bit FSX!!
May 31, 200620 yr >In between now and FS11 most users will be using 64bit. We>should be able to install 64 bit FSX!!That's a good case for FS11 supporting 64 bit, but not for FSX ;)The FS Team thinks about the average user ;) Quote from MS Flight Team Lead: "We’ve made some guesses"
May 31, 200620 yr > 64bit just isn't catching on as fast as 32bit did.32 bit did NOT catch on fast. When I bought my first 386 MS-DOS 5 was MS latest OS. Must've been at least four years till Win95, and even that was a combination of 16 bit and 32 and ran 16 bit applications for years to come.Regards,http://www.bremmekamp.com/img/misc/avsim.jpg
May 31, 200620 yr 64 Bit is still an enthusiasts OS. Vista will help transition to 64 bit, as the system requirements will be higher, and the fastest/best CPU's are the Athlon64 (X2's, as well) and the Core Duo (And upcoming Duo 2). I see FS11 supporting 64 bit out of the box. Vista will help users upgrade to 64 bit, but in the meantime, it's just a slow movement. I know the majority of hard core PC gamers use 64 bit, but how many use 64 bit XP? Not many. It's still got issues that need resolved. Vista will resolve a lot of those. Fact it: 64 bit isn't mainstream yet. Won't be for a couple more years. Where is 64 bit Office? Where is all the 64 bit drivers? We need driver support and we need the mainstream application support to move the majority of people over.64 bit is where we are going, but it'll be a while! Until then, I put 2 copies of FSX on pre-order. If I run both (each on a separate core), does that make me 64 bit? ;) We love the humor!
May 31, 200620 yr Author Hasn't this been discussed multiple times in this forum already? Please use the search function then you'll know all the reasoning behind releasing as 32 bit only - I'm sick and tired of seeing the same arguements replayed again and again. A thread like this was on the first page of this sub-forum only a few days ago, maybe 3. It's 64 bit overload for me. Sorry to seem so snatchy but its annoying. Tired of seeing "demands" too... ckyliu, proud supporter of ViaIntercity.com. i5 12400F, 32GB, RTX4070, more in "About me" on my profile.
May 31, 200620 yr I did run a search and couldn't find anything relevant so I began this thread. I don't recall seeing a thread like this several days ago but I must admit, I haven't been keeping up on a day-to-day basis either. I don't "demand" that things be done in FSX or any other pre-release video game. I do have my wish-lists, questions, and concerns just like everyone else. I apologize if this thread offended you.
May 31, 200620 yr I'm just curious, would it really be that difficult to release in both? Isn't it only a matter of changing a setting on the compiler or are there new functions in the machine code that would have to be taken into account when authoring the higher level languages? After all, Vista will most likely be available with both to get the right variant of Windows for the user's machine. The main reason I can think of not to is that if the DVD is already full then it would double the DVD's used but I'm sure most users wouldn't mind adding a few dollars to the price so that they can have the 64 bit version for when they do upgrade... which will be rather soon for many people and this is for many reasons besides just FSX.Scott / Vorlin
