FS2004 and DirectX 10, an insight...?

Featured Replies

We are all excited about FSX's move to DirectX 10. However, we are obviously limited on what we know about each and their upcoming performance. My question is, what kind of improvements would we see in terms of FPS if FS9 were coded to take advantage of DirectX 10? That is, if FS9 were created using DirectX 10 (with all other factors kept in check -- including an ability of Windows XP to utilize it), with the current top of the line (or close to it) computers and videocards (capable of using it), what kind of performance increase would we see?As I see it, if this question could be answered, it should give at least a hint of what to expect with FSX.RH

Exactly

The G80 & R600 (DX10 Parts from NVIDIA and ATI, respectively) have not taped out yet, as of current knowledge or rumors. If it is a beta card, it'd be a VERY early alpha card. Drivers would be a mess. DX10 features would be non-existant (not running Vista). It'll take a few months before we get more information.

I'm not "sure."The person herself said:"I am at this time beta testing a 1gb DX10 compatible card!!"Key word being compatabile. :) I will restate:I would be suprised if it was a true DX10 card. How about the question that if FS9 were written using DirectX 10, how much of an improvement would we see compared to what we have now (with all other factors the same)?RH

The thing about DirectX10, is that you have to separate out what the new api brings to the party from the Vista drivers that will be used for both DirectX10 and DirectX9 hardware and apis. I'm hoping that Vista Beta 2 will have this new driver model in it (my assumption is that it was not in beta 1, at lesat I have not seen any comments about it anywhere). Now the directX10 api has some new capabilities in it, such as geometry shader. various examples have been coded showing how this can be used in particle systems and also better lighting. As far as horsepower, we will have to wait and see if the hardware achieves better performance by improved shaders and buffer management, better resource management and runtime performance, or we are just throwing more gpu, ram, and pipelines at the problem. one thing about DirectX10: it requires a set of hardware caps. It will not query the hardware caps and accomodate whatever it finds on the card. So if your current card doesn't have the DirectX10 caps in it, it won't run. But Vista Aero I guess will use DirectX9. My impression is that if you don't have hardware that can run shader model 3, Aero might not run. Then you might as well buy the most basic Vista version, which from what I can tell won't have Aero in it (or maybe I'm mistaken about this?)One other thing (hope I'm wrong on this) is that to get dual core support you will have to buy the super-premium version (ultimate) of Vista. At lesat that is what I read somewhere.Data here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/directx/scott s..
