Need help on deciding which Z390 motherboard

Recommended Posts

I have my memory G-Skill 3600 CL15 and my i7-8086K CPU. Now it's time to decided on which motherboard to get. I've always used Asus boards but from all the reviews it seems like Asus has gone down hill in quality and VRM. What I like most about Asus is I am familiar with the bios which is easy to use.

I am looking at the following three boards so I can overclock my 8086K between 5.0Ghz thru 5.3Ghz. I briefly looked at the Gigabyte bios and I see what everyone talks about but it looks manageable. What do some of you recommend?

  • Asus ROG Maximus XI Hero
  • Asus ROG Maximus XI Code
  • Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Master

I'm running the 8086K at 5.3 with the same RAM kit on a Maximus Hero XI.  Easy overclock, VRMs run warm but not hot, and it's very stable.

My best sim build ever--no complaints.

Bob

I'm following along the lines of your build except I will be using a 1080TI for now. Is your Hero the Z370 or Z390?

Thanks

Maximus X not XI but..... best board I've ever bought. Love it. Overclocks great. Great features. I wouldn't worry about all that VRM stuff, they might run  a tad warmer, but well within normal spec. Not an issue.

If you do decide to look elsewhere, do consider EVGA boards, they are very good indeed, and excellent support.

Maybe I'll just go with the Hero or the Master. This is a hard call. I hate the UI on the Gigabyte but there board is top notch.

Well I decided to go with the Asus Hero XI. This was due to the Bios UI which I am use to and I haven't had issues with any of my previous  Asus boards.

I will have the CPU, Board and Memory on Monday. I can either break down my 7700K@5.0 or build new.  Either way I sure hope I see an improvement like others have mentioned. Right now everything is pretty good except the FSLabs from time to time and depending on the airport. I figured this build will get it that extra push it needs.

Hi. I would recommend the Gigabyte Z390 UD. It's a good, budget mobo.

I'm going with the last one 😉 Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Master (great board and VRM )... But then again I'm going also with another CPU and memory 😲

good MoBo ,   the vrm  is ok if you not extreme oc , custom water up to vcore 1.425 no problem but  i dont recomend over 1.4V on a 9900K even on waterciller.

Just finished transferring over to my 8086K @ 5.1 /1.3v and I'm quite happy with my P3Dv4 performance over my 7700K @ 5.0. I cheated and just moved my HD over and didn't bother to clean install. Win 10 took care of everything for me and I used a program to remove the old driver from my previous board.  As some had mentioned I'm seeing steady 30 FPS on my 4K@30hz display compared to the 7700K which would struggle from time to time depending on the scenery. The only time I see a micro load is when its a scenery issue. To me this was a worthy upgrade.
