Button/Axis Assignments often get replaced by sim?

Recommended Posts

There is one problem that I encounter frequently and it drives me nuts.

Out of the sudden, the sim decides to replace my button and axis assignments with new ones. For example, I have "autopilot disconnected" assigned to my joystick and the next time I press it, it is suddenly assigned to some function for controling the Avatar mode.

I tried to make the standards.xml read-only but this seems not to have any impact. However, the next time I start the sim again, my settings are there again, Today, it happend right in the middle of a flight. I checked my assignments before doing anything and everything was fine. But as soon as I started push-back, it was replaced again by some Avatar mode functions.

My setup is a joystick, a Saitek Quadrant, and rudder pedals. Everything is configured via P3D, as I do not own FSUIPC.

Any idea to overcome this nuisance would be highly appreciated.

Best,
Christoph

The idea i would offer is...FSUIPC

Have same issue.  Good idea about FSUIPC which I also use but that will not help when the FS puts back in all AXIS positions and slews you might have removed in P3D.

Actually it works just fine *IF* you completely disable joysticks and axis assignments in sim. Let FSUIPC control everything and the only thing you have to deal with is Windows occasionally swapping joystick inputs.

top the OP - prior to switching to FSUIPC years ago I had the same problem as you - only way I stopped it was to leave my devices plugged in to the USB ports all the time. Unplug and replug and the possibility of reassignment increases.

Wholeheartedly recommend FSUIPC for this as well. Additionally, you may also want to adjust your power management on your PC. Not necessarily the case here, but if Windows puts your USB controllers to sleep, it’s possible when woken up FS will recognizes them as a new controller, which would look like a “reset” of your assignments.

I have the need to use P3D assignments for a few things involving A2A aircraft, and everything else is on FSUIPC. I solved the random reassignments years ago by P3D  doing the following.

Find the controls folder in Users/, name/, appdata /roaming /Lockheed martin/ P3D V x / Controls/ and under properties for that folder change it to read only. You just have to remember, if you want to change something in that folder you have to uncheck the read only box, make your change, then recheck it.

If using FSUIPC for assignments, it is recommended to completely disable controllers in the FS. This will prevent the FS re-assigning.

To handle windows changing USB device ids (for example, when you unplug and plug into a different USB port), you should use the JoyLetters facility provided by FSUIPC - see the FSUIPC user manual on how to use this.

Thank you for all your help and ideas! Very much appreciated. It seems that I am not the only one who is facing this issue. And believe me, suddenly switching to Avatar mode while disconnecting the A/P will result in a nasty ending.

What I still not understand is how this can happen during a sim session were all devices are plugged any continuously used. Moreover, it does not only change button and axis assignments, but key assignments too. All but a few key assignments are deleted in my personalized profile. But even key assignments will be reassigned when this problem occurs. Starting the sim again, everything is back to normal. It feels like P3D is somehow losing my settings during a session. I do never unplug my USB devices and my venerable keyboard is even using an old PS2 connection.

FSUIPC is very tempting for me to get  and would help me a lot to finally assign proper reverser axis. However, I think that the same problem will rise again even with the controllers disabled in sim.

Moreover, I changed the properties of my Standards.xml and Calibration.xml to "read only" since I switched to P3D in 2017. However, the sim is ignoring it. Right now I would say that this is a sim issue and not a Windows issue.

PS: And it happend just again at a very busy Dublin. I checked my assignments/axis before doing anything, everything was fine, and suddenly...
