34" Mon with a GTX1080?

Featured Replies

Hi guys.
I'm considering a 34" 3440X1440 monitor.
Right now I'm getting excellent P3D performance with a 24" monitor at 1080p  and a GTX1080 (full system specs in sig). I know there will be some performance  impact  if I go to a 34" at 3440X1440 and I don't mind if I have to drop back a notch on some settings if needed. I'm just concerned about the performance impact being unmanageable. If anyone has any thoughts/opinions on what I might expect it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Lloyd

You'll be fine 🙂 I love my 34" monitor, gaming, photoshop, illustrator, office... You name it. You should be okay with performance too.

That is a fantastic OP Lloyd, and your reply Ivan, because I too am contemplating the same route as Lloyd, and like you Ivan, have exactly the same hardware awaiting a new 34-in monitor.

Currently on an excellent IPS 24-in Dell, so far satisfactory via a GTX970 on an older i5-4670K based system, so this thread certainly caught my eye.

For the OP: as long as you don't go nuts with hi-def terrain textures or AA, you should be fine.  It might have been possible to run SSAA togther with dynamic lights at 1080p, for example...that's probably not happening on a 21:9 1440p display.

Keep in mind that the OP has an 8GB GTX1080...that's a much more powerful GPU than your 4GB (more like 3.5GB, actually) GTX970, so the answers to the OP may not apply to your use case.

Bob, it may have missed you in my earlier posts in another thread where you helped me, but my new rig is based on a 11Gb MSI GTX108Ti, so methinks i should be fine. I do keep abreast of developments if a tad slow to join the 'race'.🤣

1080 best with 2560 * 1440.

1080Ti ideal with 3840 * 2160. Minimal AA required with UHD.

Thanks to all responders thus far.

Ray - As a regular reader of these forums I thought I'd hear from you and thanks for taking the time.

Given I have a 1080 and not a 1080Ti, what you are  saying is kind of along the lines of what I was thinking seeing I will be pushing at least double the pixels at 3440X1440 compared to my 24" 1920X1080 setup.

I was looking at perhaps going with a 34 inch monitor at 2560X1440 but I'm concerned about image sharpness on that size display at that resolution.

What are your thoughts on that?

Thanks,

Lloyd

Yeah, OK, but from what you wrote above it looked like maybe you were considering going with the 970.

Your GTX1080 was serious overkill at 1080p.  AA will be a larger hit than just the increase in pixel count, and a 34" 21:9 monitor won't need a lot of AA to produce a sharp image.  Anything over 27" at 2560x1440 is going to need significant levels of AA due to the decrease in pixel density (pixels per inch).  My portable simming rig runs 2560x1440 on a 24" GSync monitor...very sharp image even viewed at close (22") distance.  A 27" monitor at that same resolution is still nice and sharp, but the pixellation (and thus the need for AA to kill perceptible jaggies) starts becoming apparent there.

Once more, it seems mia culpa for not phrasing my reply to the OP.I was merely going with the 24-in line.

Hi Lloyd,

There's a useful calculator that will help here. The key figure is pixels per inch PPI). Imagine 3840*2160 on a 28" display and then on a 55" display. The same number of pixels spread over a larger area so perceived sharpness will be very different even with the same resolution.

3440*1440 on a 34" will give a PPI of 86. Your old 24" 1920*1080 gave 92 so in reality you'll see a slightly less sharper image. But the larger display will give greater immersion.

If you want to try various monitors and resolutions here is the calculator. https://www.sven.de/dpi/

LLoyd, as you mentioned your proposed 34" monitor will be shifting 5m pixels compared to 2m currently. It might be worth checking how much your 1080 is being worked by downloading GPU-X and monitoring load. For reference my 1080 Ti runs at 50-60% even at 3840*2160 so the 1080 should have enough muscle.

Just to clarify that the screen size has NO impact on the performance. It's all about the screens resolution.

Thanks guys. Quite familiar with GPU-Z but hadn't used it for some time.

So, on Ray's suggestion, I'll set up a complex scenario and record some numbers.

Should be able to report back tomorrow with results and hopefully a decision.

Thanks again.

OK. Did my "acid test" - Majestic Q400 at Orbx EGHI with Orbx TrueEarth GB.

Without tinkering with any of my graphics settings, I flew a short hop over to EGHH and back to EGHI in some cloud (FEW015 SCT018).

GPU-Z showed an average GPU load of 77% with an average memory usage of 5275 MB.

Based on that and the comments from Ray, Bob and others I'm thinking my GTX1080 ought to do just fine with the 34" 3440X1440 monitor.

I think Rick said he was contemplating doing something similar so once I take delivery and get it set up (week to 10 days) I'll report back.

Thanks to all for your help. Greatly appreciated.
