For flightsim-curved or flat monitor question

Featured Replies

I am thinking of buying a new PC. It will have a nvidia 2070 super card.  I also want to replace my old monitor with a new monitor, about 27 inch. Can someone tell me if going from a flat screen to a curved monitor is a good idea for flight simulator.  I have never used a curved screen, so I don't know how this effects the overall flight simulator experience.

Thanks,

Jim

I wouldn't mess with a curved screen at 27".  The 34" 21:9 3440x1440 widescreens are all curved, and that seems to work.

The biggest reason for having a curved screen is to reduce the off-perpendicular viewing angle towards the sides of the screen, but most curved monitors don't have an aggressive enough curve to make a lot of a difference there.  My 55" flat-screen is 4 feet across, and I haven't found myself wanting for a curved display.  I have used my big monitor offset...e.g. I sit offset to the left side situated as I would be in the left seat behind the panel of a side-by-side cockpit, and for that a curved screen would not work.

If you can spring for the 34" curved screen do that. You won't regret it. IT WILL be far better then flying on a 27"

This is an entirely subjective choice. The only person who can decide is @JiBrady. Your best way is to visit a computer shop and view the monitors in display.

I would agree with Bob a 34” monitor should be the minimum size.

What will help enormously is if you can take a USB stick with some screenshots taken on a display with the same resolution and aspect ratio. I did that when considering a Sony 32” HD TV and it convinced me it was a good choice.

Maybe someone reading this could help you.

I am thinking of replacing my 3 24" monitors with 2 curved 34" screens, with the join slightly off-set to the right to simulate left seat.  I run a NVidia 2080 for the 3 monitors and a 1080 for the Realsimgear GNS 530.  Any comments?

Jim, I have had a Dell Ultrasharp 34" curved screen capable of doing a 30Hz refresh rate and I strongly recommend this capability for both P3D and MSFS.  Curved somehow feels a little more like being in a cockpit than looking at a flat screen.  I am very happy w/ 3440x1440 resolution and aspect ratio, the ultra wide and short--feels once again more like being in an aircraft.

Luis: Did you ever do your two 34" curved monitors and if so, how do you like them?

Also, do you think this set up would work for a two pilot system?

Thanks

Can confirm. Have a Monoprice Zero-G 35" 3440 x 1440 curved ultrawide monitor. Makes all the difference in the world in MSFS. It's not THE best monitor or anything, but got it for a song at $300 when it was on sale, which is an incredible bargain. Looking it up now, it's $350, which is still a very good deal.
