P3Dv3 lovely legacy

Featured Replies

Some fellow simmers have given up P3D after looking at the FS20 screenshots . No way that they can get the same level of immersion, they say ! I respect that , to each their own, and I am very much looking forward to Asobo's baby too but browsing old screenshots of mine,it seems to me that P3D with the right addons is no slouch in the immersion department ! Some examples below, all screenshots in P3Dv3 with ASN, Orbx sceneries, Pilot's mesh and A2A aircraft except if otherwise stated.

Especially like that first pic with the (T6 Texan is it?) climbing away from the airfield. It's lovely.

Quite true. My profile pic is from Prepar3D 3 and I remember it as being more fluid as v4 making me use it more actually in terms of hours per week.

I fully agree with you (and this holds true for XP11 too) and btw, very nice pics to prove it 😊😊

Any attempt to stretch fuel is guaranteed to increase headwinds

My specs: AMD Radeon RX6700XT, AMD Ryzen 9 5900X, 32GB RAM, 34" monitor, screen resolution: 2560x1080

P3D can still look pretty good.  But it's eons old compared to the new screenshots of the new sim.

Still though, without all my addons, 2020 will still be an empty sim.  Hopefully someday we can have our peripherals and addons working.

What kills P3D compared to FS20 is the atmospheric light.  I am not interested in the endless tweakings of the PTA-like addons and my shots lack any light « subtlety ». P3D is brutally binary, light or shadow.

Also cartoon-like texturing and repeat textures that make up landclass scenery.

A lot of Orbx texturing can appear very realistic and is obviously a million times better than vanilla P3D, but I really don't like this^

Streamed photo scenery with appropriately-placed autogen is the way forward.

Funny you took that example. Valdez is an airfield that I have been using a lot over the last FS iterations. A favorite of mine. In spite of that, I couldn’t make myself to buy the new Orbx photorealistic scenery because in the screenshots I saw, I felt it « flat ». Flat like a sparkling beverage left open if you catch my drift. Superb of accuracy, but « flat » specially the PR cover of the slopes. My take. Same when I look at the TE XP products. Maybe my eyes and brain are now set to interpret LC  textures and LC textures only 😁. I also think they should look better in a moving environment, in the sim, than on a screenshot. So I may be wrong.

As for the repetitive pattern of textures, there has been some progress over the years. Thats why I put in my threads some high altitude shots of no particular interest but to show the diversity of the pattern, with OLC EU ( France) but also with a mediocre LC map for Indonesia.

Don’t make me wrong, I think too that the LC representation of landscape is going the way of the dodo and I expect a lot from FS20, streamed or not. This is the way to go.  What we have seen in the previews is very promising. But we need to see more. The vegetation autogen for instance is not entirely convincing. Eliminating the baked shadows still to be done. I have still to see an aircraft operating at low level in a bush environment to see the sharpness of the ground underneath as I am fed up of the leopard skin of P3D/FSX coarse resolution etc.

Yeah, the default leaves a lot to be desired, and it's still possible to get some nice immersion with P3D, but of course highrez photoreal with autogen and custom cannot be beat!

No, not wrong. You just have a different opinion and there's absolutely no problem with that.

Anyway, as this is a screenshot forum, I like your 'Eastern France (I think)' and 'Leaving Riverside Ca' pictures the most. You don't have to agree... 😄

I love them equally, they are all my babies 😄 ! The left side of the Riverside pic is a PR patch of course.
