New P3D v5 trailer

Recommended Posts

Really underwhelming trailer that doesn't do much to showcase the features at all.

Better performance and sloped runways would be great but if I have to rebuy stuff in full all over again then it'll be hard to justify when I know MSFS2020 is lurking out there!!

I set up the current state of the P3D for a very long time. I will wait for feedback. If the update breaks the suffered settings, add-ons and aircraft, then I will wait for the MSFS. There is no desire to pay extra for PMDG and Aerosoft. Many developers have no place in the MSFS, so they are forced to support LM. If the transition is smooth, then I am ready to pay a small amount.

Agreed. Three things will effect take up here I think.

1. Size of performance improvements over v4

2. Cost of upgrading (base simulator and 3rd party content)

3. Availability of content (backwards comparable in its current form or developed for V5 thru early access to the beta)

Imagine performance being way better so much more FPS with higher settings. Smooth out of the box without tweaking..

Backwards compatibility with lots of already nice Addons ..

A new weather system : looking more realistic and no AA issues or stutters with bad weather and precipitation..

Water that looks like... water

Improved Shaders for a more real Environment feeling ...

Plus all other fixes and improvements..

This sounds great to me ! However, I have always been hoping this would have been included in V4 along the road.

@simbol given the NDA is lifted for you and AI is an area you have been working on or some time, are you able to tell us what (if any improvements) have been made to the AI or ATC capabilities of the sim? There is some loose mention of SID/STARs in the change log.

Cheers,

There has been some improvements to AI, some SDK fixes that will allow for example the handling of AI helis to work better.

ATC has now also 8.33Ghz frequency spacing.

My big questions: Are there SDK improvements for AI, so we can finally assign runways? Has the object loading been improved so we don't get the AI load stutters? Cheers, Bryn.

Yes there are some, it is on the SDK change log if you pay attention.

We still unable to assign runways for AI, I have been asking for this to LM but the priority for the initial release of V5 has been the conversion to DX12 + performance improvements. I am sure next minor revisions will add lot's of stuff developers has been asking for.

So, I think some of us would like to know if you normally use the P3Dv4/5 ATC, and do you think V5 has adequate ATC for serious VFR or IFR training/flying?

I still prefer the P3D ATC in comparison with others, specially for IFR.

I'd rather know if any add-on could work out-of-box?

like simple one as scenery or some basic airplane, as they do acroos 32bit platform of FSX,and P3Dv1~v3

LM has been working with developers to ensure backward compatibility. However certain things needs adjustments and these depends on each individual add-on.

This is related to the change from multi linear rendering to linear rendering in order to increase GPU performance and other areas of the sim. These changes requires certain add-ons and textures to be adjusted in order to preserve the same looks in comparison with V4.

Most things works, but the best is to wait for each developer to state their compatibility path as if something needs to be adjusted it is good you get the required updates if necesary. From my side I have to adjust all lighting effects so they work with PBR and non PBR models.

There will surely be more to come, I'd expect future point releases to leverage the DX12 improvement further - see the last sentence in the FSElite interview.."The best part is we have only used a fraction of the new engines capabilities and look forward to benefit from these capabilities as v5 development continues."

I didn't assume anything. I merely pointed out that I was not aware of any developer promising any free updates for V5 compatible products and suggested that I expected that based on past performance PMDG would charge full price for new installers. Besides my guts and speculation tend to be pretty good. Here's what I posted last Friday:

This is because V5 Beta was under heavy NDAs, so nobody was going to commit via public forums to say hey! " we have been working with LM and V5 for a while, we consider our update to this platform will be free of charge."

In any case any individual firm will assess their workload to port over to the new simulator and decide their pricing policy. It will take me 2 to 3 weeks working at full time to just to make AI Lights Reborn Professional fully compatible with V4 and V5, so although I am not charging for the update of my application, it means I am working for free during all that time, I still have to pay for food, mortgage, electricity, gas, petrol, cars and raise a family.

But think about it, would you work for free? imagine your boss tells you I need you to update all these documentation you did last year, it will take you 3 weeks and you don't get pay for that time since it is a previous document you already provided before. Or another example, you provided a service to a customer to build some doors and bathrooms, next year he wants them changed and you cannot charge him / she because you provided these goods before.

So where I am going with this, software development cycle is really not appreciated by customers, the idea that because you bought something "once" and you are entitled to have free updates "forever" at not additional cost is just insane.

So please don't judge developers who wish to charge for their time to port over, each firm has its own costs and if money is not coming thru the door it means they will need to shut down production of cool applications we all enjoy.

Simbol

Are the beta testers allowed to tell about performance compared to V4 ?

And what do they think of the improved weather/water/environment?

Simbol ? 🤓

Another important thing to mention is that via the PDK developers have now access to DX12! This means new cool stuff being developed for airplanes that will look superb.

But as a warning to everyone, don't expect such new things to be done for free FFS lol..

I was hoping that that P3D v5, would put the cat amongst the pigeons in relation to MSFS2020 but on initial look at the article and changelog for P3D v5 the pigeons will not be to worried.  The promotional video very poor, can you really class that as a promotional video?   The main updates are the introduction of DirectX 12, realistic sky using "Truesky" and updated global terrain.  The changelog is comprehensive which includes welcome features but not awe-inspiring. With the introduction of "Truesky" and updated global terrain would this compliment existing products such as ActiveSky, SkyForce and Orbx Global or would these products not be required?.  In my opinion, despite the introduction of DirectX 12, P3D v5 will appeal  more to new users as it will look much better straight out of the box without having to buy and install addons.  I was hoping that P3D v5 would sway my mind not to consider MSFS2020  but at the moment I think I will stay with P3D v4.5 and wait for the release of MSFS2020.  I am dissapointed

No changes to the almost 20 years old flight model, barely noticeable graphic improvements, looks more like v4.6 to me.

I can't imagine that there are many people who are going to buy a rather mediocre P3D improvement and to pay again for updated old addons.

I am disappointed by the trailer too. My observations:

  • The default airports still looked rubbish compared to MSFS trailers
  • The grass and trees looked rubbish compared to MSFS trailers

what are the new engine's capabilities and what cool new things can we possibly look forward to?
