Bill,Would you be able to point me to where I could download MemStatus 2.4 from? I've got an older version but I can't seem to find the newer one which I would be very interested in having. Many thanks

>What I'd like to know, based on your screenshots, is if moving>from a 256MB to a 512MB video card would help? By help, I mean>a boost in FPS and by how much?>>It looks like in all the screenshots above that FSX is using>about 245MB of video memory (and FS9 much less with 69MB). Is>this the memory used by the video card, or the _extra_ memory>taken from the RAM to help the video card?Jerry, your system RAM is - well - more than adequate... ;)What isn't apparent from these screenshots is that while NOT MOVING, the video card isn't tasked with as much to handle, so yes... based on that alone the memory usage is below the available 256MB of video RAM.However, as soon as I begin MOVING, the memory demands on the video card shoot up ASTRONOMICALLY! I've seen cases (such as over NYC) where my video card's RAM + VRAM was fully saturated at 100%, and anything else was simply discarded to the bit bucket. Here's a shot of the Lear45 using my "ideal config" for FSX which shows clearly that my video card's RAM is already exhausted, and the much slower VRAM is taking up the slack. As soon as I cross the RAM threshold, my fps tanks by 50%... :-erks It's clear to me that I need at least 512MB onboard video RAM to maintain my desired target of 20fps.http://img168.imageshack.us/img168/1127/fs...s9000010mw7.jpg

I just WinRAR to extract all the files, created a new folder MemStatus and pasted all four files. Created a Shortcut to the Desktop to start the program easily.http://www.nuclearplayground.com/NuclearPl...ound/MemStatus/I just d/l'ed it again a verified: no password required!

cool, thanks! now, a question with Memstatus:a. How do you get it to show on top of FSX? Run FSX in window mode?b. It says I have a total of 501MB Video Memory, but dxdiag says I have a 256mb X700 PCI-E... ehhhhh...... that has me royally confused. 501MB would be great no doubt! but I dont think that's right...

Ok, Bill. I just tried without DAP and it works fine. :-)

eh.... FPS locked at 20, and I'm hittin 20 all the way... but it looks like this:problem.jpgprincess julianna with that cfg you posted...I'm guessing my problem is that I dont have the 512 ground textures replacing my 1024 textures?also, still wondering about the questions i posted in the above post...edit: forgot to ask: what are your AA and AF settings?? Card letting application decide I'm assuming, but what settings in game?

I have tried the resolution changes as well to assess the impact on frame rates .. I see very little difference and resolution seems to have little impact on FR .....Regards,Vern

Thanks Bill,So, in summary - 2GB of RAM and a 512MB Video card will help FPS/smoothness quite a bit.Thanks,JerryGP.S. Try changing FPS to Unlimited. I know, I know, goes against everything ACES and FS004 has taught us, but for me, it lets FPS increase nicely.

> I think,>I should have gone with the GS and 512G memory. FSX would have>benefited more from the memory than with the speed.>>MannyThat is what the FS developers said...mem size is more important than speed. My next vid card will have 1 gb of memory. !! This sheds some light on why we get frame drops near cities and/or big airports in FSX. Our cards are running out of memory, and it's dumping out the textures and in turn that's cutting our fps.RhettAMD 3700+ (@2.5 ghz), eVGA 7800GT 256 (94.47), ASUS A8N-E, PC Power 510 SLI, 2 GB Corsair XMS 3-3-3-8, WD 250 gig 7200 rpm SATA2, CoolerMaster Praetorian

>cool, thanks! now, a question with Memstatus:>a. How do you get it to show on top of FSX? Run FSX in>window mode?Yes, I run in Windowed mode and have the upper and lower task bars hidden to maximize my screen size. I move the MemStatus display from my left monitor to the center monitor for screenshots.>b. It says I have a total of 501MB Video Memory, but dxdiag>says I have a 256mb X700 PCI-E... ehhhhh...... that has me>royally confused. 501MB would be great no doubt! but I dont>think that's right...I explained that in the post(s) above. Only 256MB is physical RAM on your video card, the rest is VRAM (virtual RAM) "borrowed" from your main memory. What makes exceeding your physical RAM so bad is that with 98% of main memory used by the sim, there isn't enough memory for everything that is loaded......so Windows starts using the Pagefile for the overflow! When that happens, then the brakes are really slammed on framerates... :-erks

>I'm guessing my problem is that I dont have the 512 ground>textures replacing my 1024 textures?I am not using any replacement textures at all. The only tweaks I've applied are the three files that reduce tree and roof variations, and the fsx.cfg file change that reduces the number of trees and buildings per cell.>edit: forgot to ask: what are your AA and AF settings?? Card>letting application decide I'm assuming, but what settings in>game?I have my video driver set for application control, BiLinear and AA.
