In essence, I cannot see MS abandoning its own product (DX12) and if this is indeed the case, where is the benefit for any existing Flight Sim platform? In other words, is this a stand alone engine or can it be integrated with Vulkan and DX12.  There does not seem to be any indication.

This would run on top of DX12 or Vulkan, not be a replacement. DirectX and Vulkan are graphics APIs for interacting with the GPU, not a graphics engine like this is.

As other said, Unreal Engine is not a replacement or an alternative to DX11, DX12, OpenGL or Vulkan.

It's more high-level and it can use different graphic API depending on the platform so, for example, in Windows it might typically use DX11 or D12, on Mac/Android it will typically use OpenGL or Vulkan, etc.

Everything you see in Unreal can also be made without it, because your video card is capable of that, and the graphic API used ( DX11, 12, Vulkan, etc ) can do that.

The main difference is, Unreal is EPIC games most important business, so they work on it full time, constantly improving it, making it easier for their user ( game developers ) to get access to those graphic advancement without having to meddle with the low-level details of the implementation AND across multiple platform ( PC, Console, Smartphones, etc ).

It's surely possible to do a flight simulator with UE, for example this:

It's an arcade game, very similar to Ace Combat, and it looks impressive, considering it's being made by a single person.

I believe a single map can be 20x20 km, but there's a feature that can use any number of these tiles together and stream them.

Actually there is a possibility to create entire planets in UE 5 with atmoshpere, fog dependant on altitude and you can even add a moon at real scales and see it from the planet.

Quotes from the exact same guy that your video was quoting. https://uploadvr.com/ue5-pc-vr-comments/

“All” of the Unreal Engine 5 technology demonstrated in this week’s stunning reveal will be able to work with high end PC VR, according to Epic CEO Tim Sweeney.

The statement was made in an interview with tech outlet CNET:

“Certainly, all the technology we’re demonstrating will be able to run on the high end PC-based VR systems, which means a new generation of graphical fidelity, particularly in geometry. I don’t have anything specific to announce for VR here, but I think it’s going to create a really interesting march towards photorealism … and as you see devices improve their resolution and other system parameters it’s going to be very interesting.”

This new ps5 console is not availible right now, thats why is not availible on the PC too.

When will ps5 come out 2021? PC's then will allready have the faster AMD and Nvidia card avilible.

It was and it allways will be this way, of course you have to pay 2x the price of the console.
