Back in the days of CRTs (cathode ray tubes) we had phosphor dots with certain amount of persistence. That is to say they glowed for a bit then stopped glowing. Shorter persistence was utilised on higher frequency displays. They had various settings for refresh rate so that a rate could be selected that beat less with the office lighting. It was very easy for the average human eye to see the difference between 90Hz (hertz) and 120Hz refresh rates. We could see that difference when viewing a still image - keep that in mind.

With modern screens and a still image we cannot see any difference between 20Hz and 120Hz in the still image because there's no change in the pixels whatever the refresh rate.

Introduce a moving image and it's easy to see stepping along with 18fps (frames per second), less so with 24fps, even less with 30fps. The human eye has persistence of vision. Some can handle less than 19fps but 19fps is around the norm. 24fps was used a lot in the TV shows because with image smearing and persistence of phosphor and persistence of vision that was deemed OK.

With flight sims low and slow I can put up with locked 20fps but not <18fps. With lots of turning, say in a glider, I would lower my settings and go for higher fps, usually 30fps + VSync. With a combat sim maybe up that to 60fps for more accurate shooting.

@Pete Dowson Thx very much for the reply - That makes sense, if I understand it correctly. So if I make sure to run "slow" enough frames, then the system has more time to load, and thereby the stutters are reduced - correct?

I do run 30 hz, and Vsync On (thanks for pointing out the external limiters gets confused - so was I trying to use them)

So all FPS I have above 30 is really not worth anything, as long as I make sure FPS are always above it? And I might as well put on more eyecandy/higher settings - again just making sure I keep it above the minimum?

I have to admit it makes me a little crazy when I read here (on a regular basis) that you can’t see the difference between 30 and 60 FPS.

If you really can’t see the difference, more power to you! And by all means lock your frame rate at 30 (or 25) FPS. Why not, right? You can’t see those extra frames anyway and it might cut down on stutters.

But...I can definitely see the difference. And I think most people can — really easily, too!

I recently played Far Cry 4 for the first time (I bought it years ago but I’m finally getting to my backlog). It’s from 2014, so my computer can absolutely kill it on its highest settings. Easily keeps above 60 FPS even in the most demanding scenes. And it’s smooth and wonderful.

And then every once in a while you get a pre-rendered cutscene. They’re done in the engine, and it would be genuinely hard to tell the difference — except that they’re all recorded at 30 FPS, which makes it glaringly obvious when you hit one. Not only is it obvious, it’s simply jarring to lose that fluid smoothness. They don’t feel right.

Conversely, there’s a whole movement about TV settings to ensure content filmed at 24 FPS isn’t upscaled to 60 (the so-called “soap opera effect”). How is this possible if the eye can’t see a difference?

I fear I’m belaboring this point, but only because there’s a core of true believers who insist over and over again you can’t see more than 30 FPS...

Guys. You would have to be blind to not be able to spot the difference in simulation fps. However I think most are meaning that they are OK with low frame rates depending on what they are doing in the sim.

In V5, G-Sync displays with VRR ticked are the way forward. Glad I held off on replacing my monitors with 30hz displays that really limit your other gaming options.
