I’d suggest checking out Chock’s original review on YouTube, he goes into quite a lot of depth on that question.

I found an hour + review, & a 17 minute update review.

I skimmed the 1st one & couldn't find any material on the Freeware aircraft - if someone could point me to the relevant section of the video it would be appreciated.

Is the AH DC-3 so much better than the Manfred Jahn team's P3D version that one 'must have' the AH??

If so, in which areas?

Depends on how much you love the DC-3 and obsess about it as to whether you think it's worth buying or whether you would save the cash and use the freeware one.

The payware Aeroplane Heaven DC-3 and C-47 package ends up being quite expensive, since it is two add-ons, albeit for slightly less if you buy them bundled and you can of course just by one and not the other, but for both it is still 54 quid and in fact it was nearer 60 quid when I bought it off Simmarket.

That said, it does offer some unique things, including a floatplane version of the C-47, plus the regular C-47 variant, the C-53 version with working parachute troops you can drop and some variants are modeled with the radar package and different exhaust fits, so it's got pretty much every C-47 version you'd ever want with perhaps the exception of the Vietnam War era minigun-equipped 'Spooky' gunships. The DC-3 comes with numerous engine variations, different cargo, passenger door and window configurations, DSTs etc. All of these have different Virtual cockpits and specific controls, so if the specifics of a particular DC-3 or C-47 variant are what you are after, then the Aeroplane Heaven package is more likely to cover what you are after.

Having said all that, the freebie Manfred Jahn version (be aware that there are several kicking around with various tweaks and updates) is of course free, and it is very good. It's not quite on par with the modeling seen on the Aeroplane Heaven packages, but it's pretty word not allowed close and considering one costs nearly 60 quid and the other one is free, then you know what I mean by whether you think that difference is worth 60 quid will depend a lot on how obsessed you are with the real thing.

Keep in mind these are not the only games in town. The Just Flight Legends of Flight DC-3 (costs 22 quid) and the expansion pack for it (£7.69) get you just about the most comprehensive set of DC-3s and C-47s you could ever wish for, including a flyable WACO glider which you can also tow (there is a freebie demo of this package which gets you a C-47, but you can only fly it below 1,000 feet in the demo version).

Then you've got the Leading Edge Simulations DC-3 (which is just about to have a new version released in a few days time). This is a bit pricey at 40 quid (for the current slightly old version, no idea what price the new one will be), but if you use X-Plane, then it is worth having. There is another one for XPlane as well, but that one isn't very good, so for XPlane, get the Leading Edge ones.

If I were you, I'd get the Manfred Jahn one, since it is free, and see if it floats your boat, and if it doesn't, then perhaps look at getting one of the others.

Thanks for outline of AH & other offerings.

I have the MJ & fly it a lot. I was trying to deduce if the AH had something the MJ lacked.

Missed the JF Legends  set so will look that over

- Just looked at it, but its showing as FSX. Anyone got it to run in P3D v4??

Yup, JF ones can run in P3D V5. In fact that is exactly what they are doing in my video review where I compare their American Airlines paint job to the Aeroplane Heaven one and their differing levels of detail on the engines, undercarriage etc.

& to muddy the waters I found last night in Fly Away Simulations a freeware C-47/DC-3 Megapack by Jan Viser.

Which I think is the original M Jahn FSX  taken into P3D by JV & tweaked.

Quite a few liveries I don't have in the M Jahn rendition.

So much choice🙂

Just to prove the older JF DC-3 and C-47 - and the expansion for it - work V5, they are pictured below, and note that frame rate and GPU usage too (90 fps and around 2.8 Gb). Ironically, in calling this the 'Just Flight DC-3 and C-47' we are skipping past the fact that this version too was made by Aeroplane Heaven for Just Flight, so in reality the recent release and this older JF version, are both AH creations.

For fans of the DC-3 and C-47, I would say this older package is worth having even if you have the newer one; sure it's not as detailed on its 3D model as the newer offering, but it's still pretty good, and it does offer some unique things including a towable military glider which is itself also flyable with good detail including a Wilys Jeep which can be loaded onto it, and there is, as these pictures show, an AC-47 with a specific VC including the side mounted gunsight and arming panel. There are several AC-47 schemes including this early non camo one for Puff the Magic Dragon, as well as later camo ones for Spooky etc. The military transport and paratroop versions include a lot of detail, such as British Paras and American Airborne figures in the cabins and jeeps which can be loaded via the double cargo doors.

If you also happen to have the FSAddon Waco glider package, which I do also recommend as it is great, inexpensive and includes a driveable Wilys Jeep, then in combination with all these DC-3 C-47s etc, you can have a lot of fun replicating airborne operations.

Anyway, here's the AC-47 from the older Just Flight package in P3D V5 just about to open up with its miniguns on the Stanlow Oil Refinery:

I’m not clear whether the the mj dc-3 works in v5 with or without a workaround. Great info in this post, thx.

If anyone is thinking of getting the 'old' Just Flight Legends then worth checking the main online outlets as the pricing varied when I looked yesterday.

I am also intrigued as to how an aircraft, (Just Flight DC-3 Legends),  that appears to have had its genesis in 2011, can run without modification in P3D v5, when many other aircraft seem to need an update each time a P3D update comes out?

Trying to understand how to get the patch for the new Aeroplane Heaven C-47/DC-3. I can not find the patch anywhere. Do I have to uninstall the first plane and download again and I get the patch automatically?

Thanks

Does anyone else experience some sort of sound phasing with the engines? I find it distracting and it detracts from what should be a beautiful sound from these radial engines.

PC- AMD Ryzen 7800X3D, 64gb 6400mhz RAM, Nvidia RTX4090

Good description of what I am hearing.  Very distracting.

I have not been to AH's help area about it, yet.

Cheers
