So it looks like MSFS is using the same awful mechanic as X-Plane in that the mouse wheel automatically zooms.

It's driving me nuts. When you're trying to rotate some knob and there's just a little turbulence, the mouse easily is out of the clickspot and starts zooming.

Is there any way to revert to good old FSX/P3D mechanics that only let the mouse zoom if you hold SPACE or some other key?

I didnt find any. I wanted to map holding shift and scrollwheel to zoom, but you cannot combine hotkeys that are split over more than 1 peripheral (in this case, keyboard + mouse). I ended up just deleting the keybind for zoom. I never use it anyway.

I swear there is way to change it to toggle or something in the settings...can't think of where though

It can be changed under controls...

Can be unbound, yeah. But then you can't use it for zooming at all.

You can set it to middle click + scroll. I just tested that and worked fine.

If you click on the box next to Zoom Cockpit View, for example, clear the current assignment, and then click in the top box that gets the sim ready to receive a new command combination, so just scroll up and press the scroll wheel down (in my example) and the box should then be populated with two commands with a "+" in between.  It should read "Mouse Wheel Up + Mid-Click"

Do the same for Unzoom Cockpit View.

Sorry, it's a little hard to explain without a video, but it's the same as making any other assignment with a joystick or controller...hope that helps!

You can basically assign several combinations of presses ON THE SAME PERIPHERAL, so as cwburnett explained, you can make zoom bound to middlemousebutton click + scrollwheel. What you cannot do at the moment, is combine peripheral clicks - ie shift + mouse scrollwheel. 

I had the opposite happening and it's equally frustrating.
Constantly messing some knobs up while trying to zoom in or out makes me want to stab the screen.

I tried to set the zoom to mouse right click + scroll, as the right click is the panning mode anyway but this just wont work 😞
