German review confirms massive performance problems.

What did you change to fix the GPU under-utilization problem?

I found that lightingservice.exe in task manager was causing my constant stuttering. Only way I found this is that others said just by opening and setting the focus to task manager made the stutters go away and they came back as soon as they switched back to MSFS. I think there is a bug where MSFS doesn't like certain things running on the PC.

I just solved the problem on my system. The answer was to turn hyper threading on. Massive improvement! I have an older 4790K 4-core CPU, running at 4.2 GHz. I have always run with HT off, because P3D absolutely will not perform well with it on. (Yes, I have tried multiple affinity masks). In P3D, HT causes stutters.

But with MSFS, the performance improvement is phenomenal with HT on. CPU load went from an almost constant 100 percent, to averaging about 55 percent. I just flew a 60 mile flight in the G-1000 C172 at 4000 feet, over hills covered with dense forest, and watching the terrain roll by out the side window shows very smooth performance indeed, with a frame  steady at 45-50 FPS.

With HT off, CPU was at at an almost constant 100 percent, with major stutters and FR bouncing all over the place, and sometimes dropping to 1 or 2 FPS.

Reading that both CPU and GPU load decreased at the same time as FPS went down with a complex aircraft I am just sitting here thinking that they might have multi-threaded it too much in some scenarios? If all these AC subsystems and displays in the cockpit runs on their own threads you might end up with thread sync problems? That can end up with lower CPU load.

And I sure have lower FPS than in any other scenario than in an airliner over NY - but that is kind of where it should hurt 😉 Thinking back at the FSX release I recall a slide show even if I had a top of the line system back then. And horrible stuttering / freezes to load textures etc.

And reading that german article with google translate the overall feeling seems rather positive - or is it the Google German -> Swedish translation maybe? 🙂

In my case, I don’t have that service, but I have definitely seen issues in the past where specific services have caused problems like that.

If they wanted to use DX12, they would've decided for it in the beginning of development, when DX12 was already 2 years in the market. To think there will be a DX12 switch in the near future is very naive. They took the easy way, and now they get the check.

Err no? Dx12 came out 5 years ago, Development started 6 years ago.

I was under the impression development started 2017 - two years prior to announcement. There is no further info on Wikipedia.

It was in an interview or maybe dev post, I'm trying to find it now.

Here's an article from 2014 that will set you straight. Wackipedia isn't a very good source.

I had been using a 2004 Pentium 4 (upgraded in 2012 to a Pentium 4 64 bit at 3.8Ghz) with 4GB (3GB usable due to chipset) of RAM and a (2012) Nvidia GT 440. It was all I needed to run Office, browse the web, and learn songs on bass in Rocksmith. I bought a new Alienware (i7 9700, 16GB RAM, 1GB WD NVMe SSD, RTX 2600 with 6GB GDDR6) in early July in anticipation of FS. I haven't had any performance issues whatsoever (except those reported by my wife, but that's for another forum). If I hadn't upgraded, I'd be like...

During the interview they said 2016. So I think it was in dovelement 4+ years.

Not in the modem era of gaming or entertainment it is not. 60 fps is the benchmark. This is a generally accepted fact with any enthusiast.

Uhm, no... there is absolutely no meed at all for 60 fps in an app that does not have the fast paced visuals requirements that fps, racing games, etc. require....

I’m just curious if you’ve ever experienced 120+FPS on a 144hz monitor in a flight sim? After upgrading my rig I can hit 100-144 on DCS with all settings maxed (singleplayer). On MSFS I can’t tell an average, but most of the time I’m over 100fps on high settings . When it drops to 60fps in certain areas it’s “bearable” but not preferable.

Point being, once you experience high framerate it ruins your perspective of 30 and 60fps.

So perhaps it’s plenty enjoyable to play at 40 for you, but I personally couldn’t stomach it anymore.

You'd be the first to say they're over 100fps with the new sim. LOL!
