MS2020 scenery - New Melbourne landmark!

Featured Replies

Among all the other scenery glitches, there's a 212 story-high house in Melbourne's northern suburbs.  Shades of the massive skyscraper in Milan in the first release of P3d v5 🙂

Meanwhile up in Sydney the Harbour Bridge is unrecognisable and in London Buckingham Palace looks like a low-rise office complex - how's that for stuffing up two major world landmarks!

There's some pretty weird things about Paris as well.  The bespoke buildings are very nicely done, but I'm puzzled about how they were chosen.  There's no Notre Dame, nor could I find the Arc de Triomphe.  In addition la Defense (the financial district) is missing the Grande Arche, which completes an axis leading from the Louvre through the Arc de Triomphe.  The other point is that POIs aren't just for sightseeing, they're for VFR navigation.  So why don't they include the Tour Montparnasse, the tallest building in Paris!  (I've been there, from the roof you actually look down from the Eiffel Tower!).  When I first took off from Charles de Gaulle I saw a tower in the distance which looked like the Eiffel Tower but thought it couldn't be Paris because the Tour Montparnasse wasn't there.  Kept flying and sure enough (a) it was the Eiffel Tower and it was Paris (b) the tallest building in Paris was missing!

Re. the generic buildings, I find the effect disappointing.  Particularly when you look at clusters of modern architecture like la Defense and the centre of Brasilia that are depicted with these - despite there being something in the right place the character of both is completely missing.  I also find they look like extrusions, which make sense given I understand they are templates given an appropriate height.

I think the point is that the generic buildings are in practice just a new form of autogen.  I find the trees, landscapes and integration of roads and runways much more impressive.

Nevertheless, it's early days and I see great potential.

Most large cities that have handcrafted POI landmarks have about five of them, so they had to choose the most iconic ones. When you filter your world map to only show POI locations, it's easy to identify the clusters of them in particular cities.

Having a look at this map filter will also put to rest all of the whining from some people about MSFS having less landmarks than previous sims. One can just count them, they're all over the globe.

Every time I see a post about missing landmarks around the world all I see in my mind is Lionel stating calmly "World is very big".

there is always the option of sorting it out themselves; after all that is what the sdk is there for.

The Arc de triomphe is in the sim.

We really going to write threads about not having every POI on the planet (yet), really though.

The tower in Melbourne isn’t a glitch, but just a mistake from their data source.

Someone landed a cub on top...awesome

I was disappointed that this was missing too, mainly because I wanted to fly through it 🙂

I just hope that there will be a way for users to add buildings. If  we need to buy every city we would like to see in detail it's the same as before. The AI generated world was promising less invest in accurate landscape but it seems that was wishful thinking...
