Washington DC Scenery gets political

Featured Replies

Not making a comment on either side (this forum is not for political discussion) but I do find it interesting that the (absolutely AWESOME) Drzewiecki Designs Washington DC scenery pack actually includes Black Lives Matter plaza.

It's interesting because that is very new, and some other things that have been around longer (such as Audi Field and the addon for the Kennedy Center) are not yet modeled (still 2D construction sites). So I assume this was a conscious decision that they manually added in.

Regardless this is one heck of a great scenery upgrade (look at how much better the White House is in the pic) but I just found the BLM inclusion interesting.

I am actually shocked they put this in there!!!!

I have a law enforcement friend who was seriously injured by a BLM supporter in an ambush style attack recently!

No matter where one stands... This is a political statement and Politics don't belong in flight sim scenery PERIOD!

There's a ton of potential political dynamite in a game that simulates the entire world in such detail. What goes in, what stays out, what gets included in what level of detail, these types of questions can directly influence the daily number of death threats a developer gets in their mail.

Then don't buy the scenery. No one is forcing you.

Maybe you'd feel differently if it was your friend who was seriously injured?  But I'd doubt it!

You might want to go look at the Google Earth image before you assume that they manually "put" this into the scenery product!!

Its not really a political statement, its merely geography. If it is there in real life, and you are making some photographically realistic scenery, there's no real reason not to include what was genuinely there.

Personally, I'm of the opinion that all lives matter and I don't need it qualifying beyond that with a condescending campaign such as that one, but that's just my opinion.

However, as much as I personally think it was a pointless campaign unlikely to change anyone's opinion either good or bad, if we start advocating for the removal of things we don't personally like, then where should it stop? Do we take out Nelson's column because it was celebrating a victory that was essentially part of Britain's colonial ambitions? Do we rename the PIO marker for London's Waterloo Station for the same reason? Do we knock down the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington and delete the virtual landmark in the sim because it might offend people who were conscripted into the NVA or the VC, or who had a relative hit in a B-52 strike during that war? Should we not have a B-17 add-on aeroplane, or a Messerchmitt? Should we remove Hiroshima from the scenery?

When you start censorship, it never ends, and in the process it pleases one but offends another. Rather we should simply be mindful of what these things are, and be sensible in how we take their existence, either virtual or actual.

From the point of view of 9.11, the game should be banned. Change your look.🙂

In jurisprudence, there is a principle - you look for the person who benefits.

I'm gonna chalk this nonsense up to you being British and therefore not entirely knowledgeable about what's happening in the U.S. politically.

https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/06/10/upshot/black-lives-matter-attitudes.html

I work for a very large, very conservative global company, a company that is the epitome of stolid and solid. This company featured BLM prominently on its internal home page, with a long supporting editorial by the super traditional CEO.

Yeah, BLM hasn't changed a thing. Whether these changes will last is, of course, another matter.

Mods, please lock this thread, because it's just going to get real nasty real fast.

Well that's what exists there now in real life. So they just might have wanted to get it as realistic as possible and that was easy to do (as opposed to adding in Audi Field for instance, that would take a lot more work). Think about it that way, it's not a political statement at all.

And no, I was trying to NOT start a political argument. I was just merely pointing out that I found the inclusion of something this new in the scenery pack interesting. That is all.

Then you'd be wrong. I'm well aware of what is happening there. I was brought up in a house where politics was there all the time, both local and global. One of the benefits/disadvantages (take your pick) of having a dad who was a politician and the mayor of my home town.

But back on topic, like all such campaigns, they become a political football for people with all kinds of agendas, yet this does not mean that the original intention of such endeavours was anything to do with what transpires with such adoptions. As I say, personally I think it was a campaign which was naive in supposing that it would change anyone's opinion which was not already one where their heart was already in the right place, but ever was it so.

So you’re saying you believe an entire race deserves unequal treatment just because on of your friends got injured by some rabid protester?
