Flying the 787 by hand

Featured Replies

Hi,

sometimes my son uses my MSFS just to takeoff an airliner and land at an airport nearby. He never uses the autopilot, always flies manually. He has noticed some problems with the 787. After takeoff, during the flight, it is very hard to raise the nose (he trims the aircraft). Sometimes engaging and disengaging the A/P by double pressing Z helps, but it's still very hard. And another thing - when he makes an approach, it's incredibly hard to slow that thing down! Even with idle throttle, gear down, full flaps and fully raised spoilers the aircraft won't slow down below 185-190 kts, which makes landing practically impossible (it bounces off the runway and flies back up). Any clues? Please remember it's about simple flying by hand, no A/T, A/P, etc.

Why would you fly a 787 by hand??????

I assume (not being one) real pilots do, for starters a visual landing at a non-ILS airport, or if the AP system failed you need to be competent to hand fly.

One of the reasons I enjoyed flying the JF 707 and 727 Professional models (Captain Sim?) in earlier versions, you didn't just hit A/T wibble down the runway take off and complete the whole flight on the AP.

This is a topic that often pops up the podcast Airline Pilot Guy.

More and more airlines requiring more hand flying to avoid the fate of AF447, etc.

Now to the original post, I don’t have the deluxe version yet, so can’t comment directly.

But since he’s doing a short hop is he giving himself enough time to slow down?

These newer airliners are very slippery and there’s tons (literally) of inertia to contend with, maybe needs a longer track to bleed of the energy?

Because he can and its fun

I sure hope the major 787 bugs get sorted quickly.

in real life we do things by hand more often than people think .

My answer was in response to this statement.

Here's a few things I've noticed about the 787:

-You need to enable both AP's for AP to work properly.
-Pressing "Z" to enable/disable AP seems to mess up AP.
-Flight model needs to be set to "modern" and not "fsx". In fsx mode AP does not work and the 787 is impossible to fly.

For weeks I couldn't get LNAV to follow a direct GPS route, I switched over to modern and it works flawlessly. And going back to pressing "Z", I had done a few flights in the 787 over the past few days and last night I decided to press "Z" to disable AP prior to landing and I was unable to control my plane because parts of the AP were still active. I will do a few more test flights to see if my theory holds up.
