Is Active Sky for XP a good investment ?

Featured Replies

I see it is on sale so I might get it. In what way will it make things better. I tried the built in XP11 live weather earlier today and it seemed to be correct. Will AS make it even more accurate ?

One thing in particular I would like is how is performance with it ?  In default XP11 I have noticed a tendency for fps drops when getting close to clouds.
Does it have cloud textures and are they an improvement over the default ?

no

Short answer: Yes.

Long answer: You can see more localised detail from ASXP METARS, along with satellite images of clouds, integration with Navigraph and flight planning. You also get options for cloud depictions (High Performance or High Resolution) so textures can be better than XP defaults. It works with other cloud plugins, such as Vivid Sky.

You'll get an FPS hit from any cloud depiction, and that includes ASXP. In very cloudy conditions, I may see a reduction from 50 fps in CAVOK to 35 - still more than acceptable. In fair weather cumulus, maybe a 5 fps hit. It is possible, with some research, to achieve results approaching volumetric clouds.  I have. Beware of Russians offering volumetric clouds. Downside: Sudden changes in your display while it refreshes the weather. This can be annoying but is controllable while HiFi and LR work out a solution.

I highly recommend ASXP. For what you get, it's cheap as chips.

Where is it on sale?

I still fly X-Plane and with the Vulkan update, I get mad framerates. I could spare a few for some weather depiction.

n/m. I found it. Still pretty steep, but thanks for the info.

The FAQ says

Q: Is a complete cloud visuals depiction replacement included?
A: No, not at this time.  HiFi is working on such technology and hopes it will be ready to debut sometime in late 2019.

Late 2019 that was a year ago. So have this been done and if not when can we expect it ?

Vulkan development got in the way of that 'target'. It was mentioned in a September development update from HiFi, but I can't recall anything about a release date for volumetric clouds.

No, nothing so far...
