November 13, 200619 yr Received my TIR4 in the mail the other day and took her for a spin in FSX tonight...all I can say is WOW! My goodness how far we've come from PC flight sim infancy!TrackIR4 with the 6 degrees of movement is just incredible. The ability to zoom in while in the virtual cockpit by leaning forward..and tilting and craning your head to look around aircraft structures and over the nose...is just...well..you have to see it to believe it! So I made a short 2 minute video featuring some of the movements with FSX. It is so nice to be able to look under the wing or around a window post to keep the runway in sight...or to get closer to a switch in the VC. I think it works best in cockpits that don't require a ton of switch pulling..like the J-3 and more VFR-types of aircraft. I don't have the patience to hunt around for click-spots in the VC very much..so working something really complex like the Level-D 767 or something might not be the best implementation of TIR..(just my opinion)..Anyway..check out the video..26MB DIVX encoded. Pretty smooth but FRAPS does put a little overhead on the CPU..actual flight was a good bit smoother. November 13, 200619 yr Thanks for taking the time to do the video. That is fantastic! As you said WOW! I've been considering purchasing one of these after hearing all the positive reports but seeing the video has absolutely convinced me.RegardsMichael
November 13, 200619 yr +1 Thanks for putting that together!Let's see I need to save up for...TrackIR4FSGenesis US 9.6m MeshActiveSkyAn update to Radar ContactSome more Eaglesoft Aircraftand then I'll be set... and broke :)Best Regards,Michael Smith
November 13, 200619 yr Hi,Belive me when i say it's worth trying out heavies with good VC's, you will never go back to 2D, examples of good ones are particulary: PMDG 747, LDS767, F1 ATR72 (not as heavy though :) ) Only had my TIR4 for about 3 weeks time and i must say that it's the single most appreciated addon for the hobby so far.Best regards,Eirik Alim
November 13, 200619 yr Commercial Member Yea, once you got one of those babies it's hard to go back to a 2-D panel. Next on my wish list is to marry that to a Matrox 3-in-one box to truly get that wrap around feeling. November 13, 200619 yr Great video!!! Best investment I ever made for FSPut FS2Crew with it and it's even better - Check out my vidhttp://www.maxkraus.com/videos/SundaySimming2.zip Regards, Max (YSSY) i7-12700K | Corsair Vengeance LPX 64GB 3600MHz DDR4 | Gigabyte RTX4090 24Gb | Gigabyte Z690 AORUS ELITE DDR4 | Corsair HX1200 PSU
November 13, 200619 yr Author Thanks for the suggestions..I'll look into getting a truly complex plane for FSX here shortly. I have probably 15 or 20 for FS9 (Level-D, SSWA310, DF727, PSS Airbus, Aeroworx B200, etc..) but haven't put any or bought new ones for FSX yet (still having too much fun with the Goose and the Maule..:D)Regards...BeachAV8R
November 13, 200619 yr Hi,How did you get it to work in FSX? I'm aware that NaturalPoint have issued Alpha drivers (TrackIR_4.1.029.alpha.03.exe) which provide some functionality in FSX. Should I install these or wait for the release candidate? Thanks,MikeBTW, I thoroughly enjoyed reading your detailed and well-balanced review of FSX over at simhq.com - a must see for us all and a copy should certainly be made available for everyone to read here at Avsim. If not a copy then the links should be provided in a sticky post.
November 13, 200619 yr Commercial Member Mike,I would go ahead and install the new "alpha" drivers for FSX and give them a try. But always good to make sure you have your original disk on hand (or create a restore point). All I did was un-install the old version, installed the new one and did not even re-boot. It worked for me. Yes, they still have some issues... not working for everybody. The one big thing you will notice is TrackIR will remain ON even when in the 2-D panel modes. Can be very unsettling at first. I understand the guys at TrackIR are looking at what can be done.So as a work-around I made a "hot key" to turn it on and off and used one of the rocker switches on my CH Yoke. That way when I change views out of VC I can quickly turn off the IR effect without taking my hands off the yoke. Works pretty good actually. November 13, 200619 yr Thanks for the video-I just ordered one!http://mywebpages.comcast.net/geofa/pages/rxp-pilot.jpg Geofa WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE-the best Flight Sim!
November 13, 200619 yr Hi Chris,Given where your 'home' is and the aircraft on your web page I'm surprised you didn't have TIR already as it seems to be a 'must' for combat jockeys.I took the plunge some months ago and use it quite a lot in the PMDG 737 and LVLD763 with FS9.The big problem with those two aircraft I find is trying to look up at the overhead panel on the FO's side to reach switches. I guess I need to refine the acceleration curve a bit more.Incidentally I have the mouse scroll wheel mapped to pause TIR so the view locks while I click a switch or spin the heading or speed knob.Currently downloading your video, and thanks for the FSX write up on Sim HQ, a very good read.
November 13, 200619 yr Well...it'll take more than TIR and VC, at this stage of development, to make up the difference in true "eye-hand coordination" that a real pilot get's to work with.I'll fly 2D...or win the lotto and build a real home flightdeck before I bother with VC. Maybe in a few more years when we all have super computers and the FPS and texture loading don't suffer so? NAH! MSFS will just throw in more eye candy and we will STILL be running at 12 FPS at KJFK. What's the latest version of "X-Plane" cost? LOL! Victor Buck
November 13, 200619 yr the video won't play for me. All I get is a green screen but do hear the sound. Do I have to decode anything?
November 13, 200619 yr Author Umm..if you are getting a green screen you might need to install the codec to run the video (it is DIVX encoded)...sorry about the unfriendly format..I just find DIVX to do a pretty good job of small file size vs. quality. So if you want..find the DIVX codec online..Vulcan - Yeah..I actually DO have a TrackIR2..but Natural Point is no longer supporting it (unfortunate). I used TIR2 with my combat sims and loved it for LOMAC and EECH..and used it in FS9 a good bit. Strider - Though I appreciate your stance..I think you are missing out..particularly in those aircraft where button pushing and switch flipping is minimal (light GA type planes)..that is where TrackIR shines. And my FPS is very solid in FSX..I've balanced the sliders and performance to my liking..so I'm pretty happy. Cruachan - Yep..I'm using the newest "Alpha" drivers with FSX. It is available on the Natural Point web-site. I'm not crazy about the 2D cockpit implementation..but the suggestion to map the TIR on/off switch to a controller button is a good one. By no means is TIR4 perfect..but it does enhance the overall flight sim (and combat flight sim) experience...Regards..BeachAV8R
