Low fps at airports

Very strange phenomenon. I am not sure it's the airports, I observed that this can happen everywhere the aircraft nears the ground but only if more than a few trees are around. Only setting that sometimes helps is setting trees to low. Which is quite strange and most likely a bug. I have no clue if this happens to many players.

It can be observed with drone view most easily: if i have 40 fps at around 1000 feet and go down, it gradually changes to maybe only 15 fps at 100 feet. Going further down I observe over 30 fps when the drone reaches the ground.

Thanks for that insight. I had noticed that the sim was slightly more stuttery than usual after this update and i tried to just ignore it. But i did a test flight from teterboro today and flew a prop through NYC Usually the frames would drop and that is to be expected but my god ... around central park the sim was pretty much unflyable. I get that the building density will affect framerate but even in the extremely rare occasion that i ever drop below 20 frames pre update (eg taxing to parking at KJFK)  it was an even presentation of frames, slower frame rate but not stuttery ... Not today ... a complete stuttering mess . You may be on to something about the trees

This was not the question of the OP and is common knowledge. The question was if the latest update did or did not impair performance on airports while on ground.

I recall having seen higher fps at KSFO which is my default test bed, but as always, I can be wrong or have installed some poisoned addon in the mean time. I also haven't seen the usual outcry at the official forum yet, so for me it's simply an open question. I for one would acknowledge some quantitative proof for or against the claim.

Kind regards, Michael

I dont recall many trees around at KSFO so it may be the usual traffic/building density reduction which is fine. Maybe try reasonably dense airport with lots of trees in view and nearby.

Stay clear of KATL then. After the update, it set a new low for FPS for me... upper teens on final in the A320. I was hand flying the final and it was rough to do in a slide show.

Ah, you have the Central Park black hole too. 🙂 That was the first time I had this, several days ago. Flying low over Central Park seems impossible, with almost one digit fps.

I am not sure what settings you use but I get high fps over central park. same with KATL.

It certainly is. Several posts about bad performance and stuttering all over the place, not only airports (maybe the reports tend to be a bit "general" and not specific to airports.

Cheers, Ed

Totaly agree Ed! I feel that sthings has not been better since last updates, stutters are worse, coulors are too bright (too geenish), to much HDR, grainy clouds etc etc, and its defenentley not the sim i bought i august and my yaw dropped and I was going like WOW! That feeling is long gone!

Best regards P

Interesting. Settings don't matter, I get terrible fps when flying low above trees, especially above central park. Everything else works wonderfully, smooth, with good fps. It really is strange. I tried several nvidia drivers but that doesn't change anything. It's always the GPU getting overloaded, I never see "limited by main thread".

I think it might be some hardware combination that gets that bug - and it obviously is a bug, because fps should not go from 50 to 20 when descending a few hundred feet. And it doesn't do that everywhere in the world. Strangest thing is that this sometimes does NOT happen at the same places. But since this happens only since update 6, I am optimistic that this will resolve next year.

Edit: Found out that I only have that in 4K resolution. 40 fps dropping to below 20 low above trees. In 1080p or 1440p fps are more or less constant. Settings don't change a lot. GPU mem usage stays below 6500 MB so it probably is no memory problem. Render settings do not influence this phenomenon, even low at 50 or so, fps still drop.

ahhh ok, 4k is the problem then. If you don't have a huge 100 inch monitor, there is no point on playing this on small monitor with 4k. Eyes just can't see the difference and it's a waste of resources.

Actually no, I don't think that 4K is the source of the problem, because a huge fps drop only when at a certain altitude is clearly a bug. And besides that: even on a 24 inch monitor you can see a difference between 4K and 1080p. I have a 32" monitor and it is a huge difference. You should try it and would never want to go back to 1080p. 1440p is ok on monitors up to 24 or even 27", though.

Your resolution is 1080.. you arent doing much with your card so clearly the issue will not be apparent to you.

Yes exactly. I said in a small monitor. Have trouble reading?

Could it be the grass ?

Since that pretty much only loads when you`re on the ground.
