WMR has hijacked my MSFS

Featured Replies

I switched from Oculus Rift to my new Reverb G2. The visuals are stunning (although the GTX 1080Ti is running flat out to get  20 FPS).

I wanted to switch back to the Rift until the prescription inserts for the G2 arrive so I don't scratch up those brand new lenses.

However MSFS now complains "No headset detected" while other VR apps are quite happy with the reinstalled Rift.😕

I don't know if MSFS has configured itself for WMR or WMR has claimed MSFS.  Annoying in either case.

I have not tried uninstalling WMR, but that seems like a rather drastic approach just to just switch VR devices.

How is the sweet spot of the G2?

Have not had a good test of it yet as I am being very careful of the lenses to not scratch them up with my glasses. (Rift lenses are in bad shape after a couple of years)

Initial impression is OK, but I have not really cinched the headset into good solid position for a real test.

I think you have to go steam VR setting and change the default vr ap from WMR to the steam VR.

I am not absolutely sure about this. Just an idea based on some problems I had when first trying to run MSFS with my G2

Did you try the OpenXR Developers Tool? With this app you can set the custom render scale to like 60% and the render resolution in MSFS to like 60% too, and still have better clarity than the Rift. I also switched from a CV1 to Reverb 2 and with 60% render scale and 80% render resolution, performance and clarity are better in the Reverb for me. I'll never look back 🙂

you need to point openxr back to oculus via registry edit:

1. Right-click on your Start menu and select Run.
2. Type in “regedit” (without quotations) and hit Enter. This will launch the Registry Editor.
3. Locate the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Khronos\OpenXR\1
4. Change its value to point to oculus (note: default path is shown below):
C:\Program Files\Oculus\Support\oculus-runtime\oculus_openxr_64.json

How is the sweet spot of the G2?

I've been using one for just over a week. The absolutely super super sharp centre is small and about 10% of the visible area. Outside the 10% to about 40% it's about the same as Oculus Quest 1 clarity when the Quest 1 is running at high super sampling, then outside of the 40% the clarity starts to drop off a little more rapidly than the Quest 1

I think the mass hysteria about the tiny sweet spot is somewhat correct, but overall the clarity is a big step up from Quest 1 at the Quests highest Oculus App SS settings..

Sorry for somewhat hijacking your thread. I thought I'd mention the following just in case anyone finds the following stuff useful; 🙂

Although visible, the pixels are tiny, and therefore the fly wire door effect is tiny.

Blacks are pretty good and not that much different to Quest 1

There's very little flare / ghosting / god rays etc compared to Quest 1

On the G2 there's no reflection of light from my eyes or skin back onto the insides of the lenses, which was present on Quest 1

I find the FOV is the same as Quest 1 before doing any mods, and I don't see the edges of the the lenses between the eyes on the G2, which I do on the Quest 1 at my 68 IPD.

One of the things I found between Quest 1 and Quest 2 when trying it was the Quest 2, although a tad sharper than Quest 1, everything was milky looking (resulting in jokes about it's outside colour), as if it was lacking a lot of contrast and a faint glow around anything bright, possibly coma? (not the long god rays). The G2 is just as contrasty as the Quest 1 and no noticeable coma

I haven't used the controllers enough to experience any bugs or give an opinion. I've just used them to configure the headset. The nice thing is you can turn them off  while headset is on to save battery life, and you don't need them at all to get into the games. They don't have to automatically turn on with the headset.

I can't get Assetto Corsa to run well with the G2.

PC2, SW Squadrons, Elite D, Alyx,  run very well.

My games seem to run at about the same FPS on the G2 and Quest 1, once I've managed to maximise quality and smooth FPS on both. The Quest compression over link may be sapping some horsepower

thanks

that worked

A bit clunky on the MSFS implementation side.

With Aerofly FS2 you can switch from Oculus to SteamVR/WMR with a command line argument when launching the app (no registry hacking required!!).

Even better would be automatically switching based on detecting which VR environment is currently running (using the registry setting to autostart the default environment if none is running)

You can switch without registry hacking. I only did it once and don't recall details, but there are threads on this by "CptLucky8" in the VR section of the official forum.

Kind regards, Michael

Pretty small. Had me a bit disappointed coming from the G1 because it seems like a step backwards from the previous version. After some testing though I decided to keep my G2 because the sweet spot is the only downside I could find. Brightness, contrast, colors and even sound are really good. The clarity of course is what makes HP headsets stand out from all other consumer headsets and in the G2 the clarity (in the sweet spot) is on a whole new level, even when compared to the G1.

The G2 seems to use more VRAM though which can be an issue depending on one's GPU.

I have the G1 and am not going to shelf out another 600 €s within a year. Only real annoyance is the inflexible cable. Does anyone just by chance know if the cable of the G2 is better than the G1 cable, if they are compatible and perhaps separately available so I could exchange it?

Kind regards, Michael

I don't know what the G1 is like but I would describe the G2 cable as "robust"

I’m struggling to picture this small sweet spot compared to my rift S. Thanks for the write up!

I know what you mean with regards to the cable of the G1. The G2 cable is thinner and lighter and thus more flexible. Overall it doesn't feel like someone's pulling on your head. The cable of the G1 is fixed to the headset though. I don't know for sure but I guess you can't replace it. The cable of the G2 can be removed.
