Swiss airport recommendations?

Featured Replies

Hi I used to fly around Switzerland when sitting my PPL.

There are so many wonderful airports there to fly to and from for both VFR and IFR flights.

A common training route for cross-country flights were Geneva to Yverdon along the coast of lake Geneva to Lake Neuchatel.

Then from Yverdon to Sannen.   Special permission is required to cross Payerne military base (which is granted if not in use) and then the flight over the Gruyere area and the approach to Sannen (Gstaad) is breathtaking.

The next leg is Sannen over the Sanetsch pass to Sion. This is an amazing experience climbing quickly to 7000ft to make over the pass with the Diablerets glaciers on one side and tall peaks on the other. Then it opens up with a very steep drop down to the Valais with Sion ahead. From there you can see most of the 4000m peaks including the Matterhorn. Some great payware scenery for Sion, Sannen and Ecuvillens on MSFS if needed.

For an IFR a trip, try Geneva or Zurich to Sion, which would be fun. Or to Lugano or Samedan would be great. To be honest there's not many places in the world I would rather fly than in Switzerland.

Enjoy!

Although is really located in France, I'm sure if you ask any swiss, he'll consider Basel to be a swiss airport...

Looking or my next challenge and I thought flying in Switzerland would be cool, particularly the IFR procedures.

Anyone have any recommendations for scenic/mountainous Swiss airports?

Don't forget the Dolomites there are some great routes in from France and Italy

SAR Pilot. Flight Sim'ing since the beginning.

You would easily get the CJ4 into Samedan or Sion. Those will handle far larger aircraft.

You could try Les Eplatures LSGC- its very short with buildings at each end and mountains at each side. Its in the Jura range rather than the Alps. Its used primarily for corporate flights relating to high-end watch making.

Ecuvillens LSGE is also very short and sits on a plateau. Its the airport of Fribourg.

My last suggestion is either Buochs LSZC - which is where Pilatus aircraft are built and test flown. Or Ambri LSPM- which is close to the Furka Pass (where 007 Goldfinger was filed). The chase scene at Goldfingers factory was also filmed at either Buochs or at Stans, I cant remember. Ive never flown into either of those two for real, but I fancy it!

Try Altiport Croix de Coeur just by Sion airport. Tricky landing. Grass sloping runway on a ridge in the mountains. I believe there is a freeware version if you want a more accurate version.
