Epic Install

Featured Replies

I have decent (OK) internet at 5mbs due to my circumstances so I'm looking at a very long haul to get 150gb.  I can do about 10gb a day tops.

I wonder if the install will be a putoff for some who don't have even decent web?

cheers

Good luck, two weeks is an epic install for sure. Imagine if we were still on dial-up. The original minimum bandwidth spec for MSFS was listed as 5Mbps, recommended 20, ideal 50.

I have a 6.5 mbps connection and leaving it on 24 hours per day (with the odd check to make sure it hadn't stalled), it took about two and a half days; which was quicker than I expected, and was during the week, so luckily I was at work for a lot of it.

The size of the download is definitely an issue, for people like you and me on slow broadband, and so are the updates (11 gig last one) and in sim data usage.

Luckily, after three years waiting, I am supposed to be getting fibre by the end of April 2021.  Only to the exchange cabinet to start with, but it should at least give me double speed, and possibly up to 20mbps - can't wait!

By the way, if it stalls on a file, pause the download, find the file and delete it and un-pause again - that has always worked for me.  It happened 4 or 5 times during install, and once I had to delete a whole folder to get it to start again, but I got there in the end.  Luckily it happened mainly in the evening when I could spot it.

PS. My calcs show you should be capable of at least 2GB per hour, so over 40GB per day.  I recon 3 or 4 days should do it.  My initial install was 120 GB download.

what I did is copy away the downloaded raw/zip files from the MSFS directory before the launcher starts decompressing (and then deleting) them. You may pause the installation to stop decompressing files before you saved them in another directory. But even if you miss 1 or 2 files it still gives you a head start you may need to re-install again in the future. just copy the files back and the installer/launcher will just download what's missing or comes on top

Whilst my connection at 50 mbs is fine, Microsofts servers are way slower than that.  What sort of download speeds was everyone getting from MS if you can remember. My recollection was about 15 is, but kept dropping lower at times.

my line is 250 but at my pc (via powerline) only 100 arrive. still fine since download was average 40-50, sometimes creeping at 8-10 but usually much higher

You are right.  They are very inconsistent, I suppose based on how many people are accessing them at the time.
Even on my 6.5 mbps connection, I was seeing it drop to 3 or 4 mbps for a few minutes occasionally.

Some countries are better than others in that regard, but better connections cost money that some can't afford or won't pay.  An upgrade from 50mbs to 100 mbs would cost me double the price and 50mbs is way much more than I use most of the time.

😀  There is a plan for everyone to be on full fibre by 2025, even rural areas, but I think it has stalled due to the install companies wondering if they are wasting their time with all this investment, as 5G will supersede it and be a better system anyway.  It is a problem; there is always something newer on the way.

It will cost the company doing my fibre install a lot of money to get fibre to the premises.  Meanwhile, the first 5G transmitters are going up in the area promising much higher speeds (not much virus about though! 😆).  I will switch to 5G the instant it is available, and the fibre company will be unlikely to ever get their return on investment.

Sometimes it is good with high taxes 😁, In Sweden the government has invested heavily for decades in ensuring that everyone throughout the country has the opportunity to get fast internet.

I use the money I saved by paying lower taxes to upgrade my internet connection. 🤣

To the OP... If your cell phone has a way to use it as a WiFi hot spot, or if it allows you to "tether" using a USB cable, you might be able to use it to get a faster connection for a little while. I get a huge data allowance on my cell phone that I hardly use. Maybe you do, too?

It was a while ago since I did the full install (launch week) but I think it was all downloaded within an hour.

The latest update was done in about 20 minutes.

I'm on 350Mb cable broadband but I also have a to use a Powerline to reach my PC so that reduces it to 220Mb. The disadvantage of cable broadband is that the coax typically gets terminated in the living room where your TV is, not in the room where the PC is! 🤣

I think the Microsoft servers are pretty fast, to here anyway. I got a pretty steady 270 Mbps while downloading the larger files of the most recent update.
