March 6, 20215 yr "Unintentionally hilarious." 😄 The first movie I ever saw in a theater was "Earth vs. the Flying Saucers." It was just before my 7th birthday. The aliens were scary. Less so when I watched it a couple of years ago. Still a good movie. I still love watching those old movies. At least the good ones. 😄 Hook Larry Hookins Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of EarthAnd danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
March 6, 20215 yr I'm going to take a wild guess here, and suppose that when Claude Rains would reel off his CV, he'd list this particular film appearance below Casablanca, Notorious, Lawrence of Arabia and The Adventures of Robin Hood. On the subject of Claude Rains. He was an interesting bloke. He was born and raised in the Clapham slums of London in the late 1880s, where 3 of his 12 siblings didn't even survive childhood, which gives you an idea of how poor and disadvantaged his background was. Not only this, he suffered from a speech impediment and of course had a broad cockney accent too. As if all this wasn't enough of a barrier to success, he was also gassed at Vimy Ridge when serving in the army in WW1, which partially blinded him and further damaged his vocal chords as if he didn't struggle enough with those already. But after the war - in which he rose to the rank of Captain - he continued pursuing an interest in acting, which he'd had prior to combat since his father was a theatre actor and director, who eventually went on to make and direct many films in the 20s and 30s. Realising he'd probably not get on as an actor with a lisp, cockney accent and the gravely tone the gas attack wounding had also added to the mix, Claude Rains undertook elocution lessons. All this paid off of course as we know, giving him the confidence to develop quite a sophisticated demeanour, and a voice which was unique and very cosmopolitan, so much so that he actually ended up being an acting teacher at RADA before having a good deal of success on stage and screen. Just goes to show you what determination can do. Pretty amazing bloke really. Edited March 6, 20215 yr by Chock Alan Bradbury Check out my youtube flight sim videos: Here
March 6, 20215 yr Claude's heartbreaking performance in Mr. Skeffington is unmatched. Thanks for posting both the movie and the Claude Rains info! Edited March 6, 20215 yr by Roger Ramjet
