Solution to looping on reinstall?

Featured Replies

I hope someone has figured this out..

Windows got corrupted and has been freshly reinstalled, and now I am trying to get all my programs running again.

MSFS is installed on a separate SSD.

I have reinstalled the base MSFS files and am now stuck in a loop where the Searching for Updates window will initiate the download of all my content, but is immediately stuck in a loop, downloading the first Landing Challenge, over and over again. This folder already exists, so it does not need to be reinstalled, but the Update routine seems confused by this.

Anyone?

I have just been to hell and back over the last six days of having MSFS 2020 not running.

I'm now back in the air with the brain fog lifting and have learned a great deal about the architecture and software environment of MSFS 2020 and it would be nice to help others.

Two Questions for you Bert.

1) Have you applied the CTD Vaccine?

2) When you are on the Checking For Updates screen - where is MSFS 2020 directing the install of the updates to? (location) AND, what size is it saying is available for storage?

Bert I take it like me you're in Canada, my suggestion take it or leave it but I had similar. What I did was make sure that you haven't limited your "Data" in the sim. Second, goto your router and limit the download speed to 18 mbit/s that's. Start at 1 Mbit/sec and their raise it until you start to see looping. For me anything over 18 mbit/s in the sim is looping but never at 18 or under.

That's interesting FPStewy but if Bert is stuck on the Checking For Updates screen - in my experience, that's not his issue at this point.

Bandwidth/ Data limits, etc, come in to play when you're flying (and streaming scenery)

At the moment Bert is AOG, and in terms of Update Downloading - MSFS 2020 doesn't appear to be sniffy about data rates until you're flying. In terms of Downloading Updates it'll happily watch itself reduce to zero - it'll still keep the connection - and when things pick up in Data Rates it's ready to pick up too.

Pretty sure that's not his issue.

Definitely worth a kick about but Bert's issue is in his PC - I'm 95% sure of that.

I'm also pretty sure what's wrong - I just need Bert to go through the Flows  - starting with those first two questions.

Bert,

Please hit PAUSE and exit MSFS 2020.

Can you please go to your Packages location (where the Update Files are pointed to and check whether or not you already have that file (Asobo landingchallenge-nzqn-queenstown) downloaded in that folder?

I understand what you're saying, again you can take it or leave it but I experienced the exact same thing, because (parts) of Canada updates differently than others, I limited my routers incoming to about 2 Mb/s considering I have a 150 Mb connection it was molasses but it stopped the looping and did the update. There is something wrong the way some parts of Canada updates MSFS. Sometimes there's no problems at all other times it loops constantly.

I do have that file installed... the problem runs deeper, I am afraid.

The junction links to the dedicated SSD for MSFS do not work (crash MSFS) and the Repair function removes them.

A reinstall is in my future 🤨

Bert

Drop your network speed to 10Mbit and retry.

No need for the Netlimiter software solution you read about here a lot, you can do this in Windows directly.

Set  the Auto Negotiation to 10MBit Full Duplex, retry and reset to Auto after MSFS had finished downloading.

Did you check the last line of your UserCfg.opt - that's where you want to point to your SSD Official and Community content?

Hmm.. On my C drive, that file does not exist, and on my MSFS SSD, I cannot open that file, because I do not have permission.

i  have tried to manually add back the symbolic links to all the folders that show up in the C Drive, including Local Cache which is where all these things are located on the SSD, but then, MSFS crashes during the Greenwich vista viewing period.

If you have some insight into this, please send me a PM, if you are willing to discuss.. 😉

Re 1) not sure what that is.. does it come in a bottle?

Limiting data rates of the router, also completely cured my update looping problem. It takes about 1 minute to configure a temporary limit for any router. Just browse to the proper online URL and click the settings.

All routers do it the same way, on mine this is the URL to send the browser to (Netflix, Chrome, Edge) (some brands of routers use a slightly different URL): http://192.168.0.1/

both the user name and password are by default (lower case): admin

A shortcut to http://192.168.0.1/ has been on my desktop for years, I use it often.

Here's another trick... I am using this one right now because reducing internet data rate did not help and I was stuck in an update loop.

Search for the filename that is being downloaded and open that folder. The file being downloaded probably won't be there (because it is not finished downloaded). But arrange all files in that folder by DATE. Next delete the last file that has finished downloading (be sure your windows recycle bin is set to save any deleted files). Now close and reopen MSFS, possibly restarting Windows too.

After an update file looped over and over tonight for an hour I did this trick and now all the files are downloading just fine including the one that was looping.

This trick I found on MSFS official forum and it worked for me just now; the hint being in message 2 of 11 in this thread:
