I have neither seen a total one, but I had 2 close experiences:

- One was in 2019, here in Argentina. 100% totality line was 100 km south of where I was, but at the time I needed to leave I was stuck in a meeting. After the meeting, I went to the highest place in the neighborhood (just a 1-km walk away), where we could watch the eclipse undisturbed by buildings. Well, not at 100% totality, but something close (I guess it was 91%). I had bought a welder lens just in case. Since it was at late afternoon (in winter), I was lucky enough to experience a double dusk that day. I mean, from daylight to almost darkness, then back to daylight and then back to darkness in less than 90 minutes? Unforgettable 😁

- Another one was in 2006, when I was still living in Colombia. I had no idea there was an eclipse that day. Anyway, I was in a welding course, and then I saw lots of people looking at the sun. When someone confirmed me they were looking at an eclipse, I donned my welding mask again, this time for watching the show. Lucky me...

I managed to see the eclipse through thin cloud, very much like Mallard's excellent photo.

I missed it. Completly overcast here till an hour or so after.

A couple of weeks ago, the Moon was on the Other Side.

We were treated to a much-hyped Super Blood Moon.

Last one was 40 years ago, so for many this was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

For once the Land of the Long White Cloud parted its skirts, and Auckland (and most of NZ) were treated to  a truly spectacular sight in the late evening. When fully eclipsed, the (huge) moon took on a sultry dark orange glow. Everyone with a phone or any form of optical device posted their take! Here's mine, complete with UFO bottom left.

One couldn't help but sympathise with the Ancients, and whatever they would have made of these events.

Looking at my eclipse app there is another partial solar eclipse in October 2022 but with a maximum of only 27% of the sun obscured here in Cheshire.

But fast forward to March 2025 and 47% is eclipsed. But the big one is in August 2026 when 93% is eclipsed but it’s near sunset when the sun is only 12° high at 19:10.

The 2026 August 12 solar eclipse will be total in Spain. That is my target location

Chaps,

The line of totality extends from Greenland, west of Iceland and crosses the north of Spain before it ends just west of Sardinia.

@Pete Dowson's son lives in northern Spain so it would be perfect for Pete and his family to see it.

But, the sun is only 7 degrees high at totality and you'll need a clear NW horizon. Totality lasts for around 1m 30s. Greatest length is west of Iceland with 2m 18s of totality.

This caught my eye... "The maximum duration of totality will be observed in Egypt, approximately 37 miles (60 km) southeast of Luxor, and will last 6 minutes and 22 seconds."

August in Egypt. I won't need more than one jumper. 😁 That is very tempting. Softies can go to Gib!

I'm guessing the very long one of 30 June 1973 which was also over 6 mins.
