X-Plane's Wind Modelling

Alas, no. X-Plane doesn't have the API

XP models the impact of the air on the airframe with

BHda1HM.jpg

The datarefs to control the turbulence on the airflow are

sim/weather/wind_turbulence_percent

and

sim/weather/thunderstorm_percent

there is also a vector setting on

sim/weather/turbulence

and controls for windshear

and have existed since XP version 6.6

Yeah, and if you muck with them it changes the weather.  It's not bad as turbulence goes, I'll say that.  But it affects more than turbulence from what I've seen.

Like I said earlier

Also, even tho that has now been reported, since that one is obvious (no windsock movement with 13kt winds at 10m) I think it is safe to assume there are many many more that are not so obvious.

Yeah, I think we're agreeing.  I also tried an experiment with the wind in X-Plane...making it vary in a realistic way with the same result.  If you watch an anemometer for a few minutes, it moves around a lot.  If the wind says 080 at 3, that usually means 040 to 120 from 1 to 6 knots or thereabout (depending on trees, how close you are to the coast, etc.).  I tried to make an app for X-Plane that would do that kind of variability but it messed with other weather.  *Sigh*  Really, it could and should be part of the sim.  It's fairly predictable.  I never worked anywhere where it was different, really.  A sea breeze is more consistent but, other than that, it's generally that way.

XP models wind deflection on mountains  ,not sure if it works with buildings. Also if not mistaken mountain edge up wind is also modelled. Don't know about low pressure in the valley's , maybe it's modelled ,  can't say because  am always in a VRS mode   :biggrin:

Among the very first bugs I reported in XP were

I got told it was a "feature request"

Time for new features to be released is just around the corner, so it should soon be time to pick these up and start throwing our toys out the pram if they still haven't sorted it.

Quite why they decided to wait until 2022 to have weather simulation as a core part of the sim is still a mystery to me, I pretty much blame the advice the likes of @Janov have been giving them.

My point was more the API is there, it's just broken/doesn't work.

If the problem is just the cloud regen then EC/ECE can be used to work around it - but this stuff should be part of the base sim and not be a metric fukton of borkened.

Interesting Jean-Luc... and yet, something I am far from being able to notice because I do not use VR...

But I'll try to investigate more in MFS :-)

Thx

Yeah, but it *could* be so much more realistic.  Seriously.  And it doesn't seem like it's that hard to make it at least more realistic.  Not looking for perfect, just close.  Go pick from so many videos on youtube and watch the pilot's hands adjusting, adjusting, adjusting through the moving air as they come in to land.  That's a big part of the fun of flying!

@Gregg_Seipp

I believe there are ways to do what you want to do with the XP11 SDK. We can talk about this offline if you want?

@jcomm

VR is making you feel the simulator (or the game 😈) in a very different way than in 2D, because everything gets magnified to life-size dimensions.

Every subtle change is instantly visible and peripheral vision helps too (even if VR has narrower FOV than your eyes, it is still more immersive a FOV than in front of a 2D monitor).

Flight path changes are also affecting more your vestibule system in VR and you somewhat "feel" it deeper (well it depends on your sensitivity on this of course). It is quite amazing to me that sometimes when pulling a 60 bank angle turn, I almost "feel" the G's pulling me down, only because my brain is making me reliving the sensations I'm experiencing in similar situations IRL!
