Flying the DCA RNP 19 in the new Working Title G1000 NXi

but xplane has that "blade element theory"!

The irony is, as discussed in this thread, MSFS probably has a better underlying flight model than X-Plane but it just needs more tweaking in MSFS.

It is of course super duper amazing, and it started as a freeware project, but I don't think it longer can be classified as a freeware project.

Yeah, a bit hard to say if it's exactly still freeware (although plenty of OSS devs get paid to contribute, as a counter-example), but at the very least, still very much free with the sim!

I know the lighter GA stuff doesn't quite get the folks in the same frenzy as the jets, but we're super stoked about this one. The simulation of these kinds of avionics is just as hard if not harder than what we did on the CJ4.

A couple examples of the small but complex details:

The real NXi can display a ton of waypoints on the map at once. However, waypoint labels get really out of hand at high densities. Therefore, just like the real unit, we built a 2D collision system to remove colliding labels, and manage all those potentially thousands of collisions by priority in a highly optimized way, each and every frame.

The CDI scaling rules are also much finer grained in the G1000 than in the CJ4. For each scaling transition instead of the scaling being applied when the scaling mode changes, it happens over the course of some distance. So, for example, when going from ENR to TERM, it doesn't just flip from 2NM full deflection to 1NM full deflection, it smoothly transitions over the course of a mile. It's almost unnoticeable 95% of the time, but the real unit does it, so we do too.

It's still early access so there will definitely be features not there yet, but those are the kinds of small details we love to include.

The underpinning of the whole thing though, is the new flight plan system. Thousands and thousands of lines of extremely complex spherical trig and vector math to vectorize, in real time, the entire flight plan's flight path based on current speed and conditions. Every single leg type is represented, including the really crazy ones like procedure turn legs. And they all get drawn in the proper shapes on the map and adhered to by the AP with great accuracy.

It's really fun to fly it!

Very nice! I can’t wait to try this on the RNP Z 13R at KPSP.

Will this come with a user manual?

Not at the moment, no. Definitely something we're thinking about doing again, though, like we did for the CJ4.

For me, it's the exact opposite: I'm much more excited about GA developments than I am about jets, especially the modern glass cockpit-equipped ones.

That said, will the G 1000 NXi be able to read flightplans generated using the MSFS flight planner?

As I mentioned in another thread, there is a 500 page manual you can read online at the Garmin website.

Just one more thing for the xplane trolls to lose their minds over 😁

Why can't people just leave it alone and comment on the wonderful job Working Title is doing instead of trying to start a flame war over simulators.  It seems you and the tank man are the one trolling.

It can, yes. If you load a plan up on the world map, that plan will sync to the unit when the flight starts. Right now any changes you make in the plane won't sync back though.

If I was trolling I would be in the xp forum talking junk.

BTW Great job to the WT team. Hopefully we get this tommorow

I'll allow it.

Since procedure turns came up, earlier, here's a quick video of the end of a test flight into KWYS, flying the ILS01 with the PT. As always, this is early beta and there are still some rough edges, but we think everyone will enjoy it. It's also worth noting that while I recorded this in 1440p, the sim was running in full 4k and my framerate never dropped below 60fps.

Yeah, it's easy enough to find arbitrary versions with your favorite search engine:  'nxi guide' should give pretty good results.   If you want them for a particular airframe, you can go to Garmin's support site, type 'nxi' into the search field, and it will give you a list of available models.

We, of course, haven't implemented everything in there, but for what we have implemented we've paid close attention to the available reference material and the official NXi trainer, so it should be a pretty direct translation.

Seems like these are the only available airframes. I was hoping to find it for the Cessna 172.

Also what revision/version is the NXi modeled of off in the MSFS? I want to be sure I'm looking at the correct manual.

Their search seems to have a limit on the number of results it returns.   Searching for 'nav iii' will get you a number of Cessna variations.   Nav III manuals are also the first ones that pop up (for me at least) on a web search.

Thanks Rob, found them! Which version of the manual do I choose?
