Tips for a full FSX Re-install

Featured Replies

Recently had my hard drive go bad and had to buy a new one, and re-install windows. Of course, that means I have to re-install FSX from scratch as well. It has been so long and so many changes made, I was wondering if there is a list or a thread talking about this, what some of the key additions are (for example, I totally forgot about SP1 and SP2), and if there is any recommended sequence to start rebuilding FSX? I know I will eventually get to the Tips and Tricks and Tweaks, but I am concerned that I will forget something really critical or important (like I forgot about SP1 and 2).

Thanks for pointing me in any direction that will give me some purpose and direction!! 🙂

I recently replaced my old Windows XP computer and faced the same thing.  My solution was to move to FSX Steam Edition and I installed it to a folder other than the default "C:/Program Files (X86)" folder.  Installation was a breeze and no tweaking of the cfg file required.

My computer: ABS Gladiator Gaming PC featuring an Intel 10700F CPU, EVGA CLC-240 AIO cooler (dead fans replaced with Noctua fans), Asus Tuf Gaming B460M Plus motherboard, 16GB DDR4-3000 RAM, 1 TB NVMe SSD, EVGA RTX3070 FTW3 video card, dead EVGA 750 watt power supply replaced with Antec 900 watt PSU.

Usually I install the first part of FSX and run it first, close it and then install Acceleration, then run it again, since running it finishes some installation setup. Then before installing addons I go to the program files FSX folder in Explorer, right-click for the menu and choose Properties, then select Security tab, click Edit, scroll down and select Users group, check the "Modify Allow" box, Apply, OK. Then I install addons. Alternatively you can install into a folder you make yourself first.

(Incidentally the Steam program files folder is already set for Users Group "Modify Allow" so there's not any issues there with read/write in the FSX:SE folder. However, in the boxed version of FSX (and P3D) the program files folder is read only to the Users group so to enable editing files and allowing addons to write to files without the burden of running as admin we can go to explorer and set the FSX folder, Users Group, "Modify Allow" box before installing addons.)

Hi,

There is quite a good guide by Nick N for the standard version of FSX, not FSX SE but he does cover the different versions of SP1 , SP2 and Acceleration.

Take a look here: https://www.simforums.com/forums/the-fsx-computer-system-the-bible-by-nickn_topic46211.html

You probably want to start with Chapter 4, Verse 1 for the FSX install procedure he recommends.

Again forget the tweaks and tuning until you have a complete, stable version of FSX running.

Good luck!

Yes! And my experience last September is that the validation routine for FSX during the installation is no longer available.  So I was totally unable to finish the installation with the FSX Gold or Deluxe DVDs.  Steam then was my only option.  SE offers a handful of advantages over FSX and SPs anyway.  All of my FSX add-ons work just as well with SE.

Thank you all for the help, great stuff that I would not have thought of! Just want to get another year or so out of this system and FSX before I get the new computer I will need to run MSFS well. Thanks!
