So, I have been massively disappointed about crashes since SU5 and HF 1 and 2. HF 2 made no difference what so ever regarding my CTDs, in fact it felt almost worse. Three out of three attempts at flying ended in a CTD (after HF2) and I was seriously contemplating a LONG hiatus from this hobby.

I rarely use dev-mode but figured I'd try it out (I was clutching at straws as I'd read somewhere that this one individual got no CTDs after running said mode). One thing stood out to me when I run the dev mode and that was a notification in the upper right corner about the existence of newer versions of the SDK. I figured I'd nothing to loose so I installed the latest version of the SDK. After which I tried the route that had CTD:d on me three times in a row: LEPA to LEBB in the DC-6 (about 750:ish NM).

No crash. Could hardly believe it. So I did four more flights in the WT CJ4 of which no crash occurred. The sixth CTD:d on me though, but the previous five was without restarting the computer so I restarted and tried the sixth again. No issues.

I think I understand, or at least have some kind of theory, what caused this. I used to crash despite empty Community folders. However, every single flight I do in MSFS (or at least 99%) I am at the same time running OnAir. Could it be that this particular program tries to access some function or other that simply has been altered as the SDK has been updated, triggering this? When I get clr.dll and ntdll.dll crashes it is always due to memory access violations. I was sceptical at first but still, I went from almost 100% CTDs to significantly less. It simply can't be coincidental.

As I side note, I was kind of expecting that the SDK gets updated as well when the rest of the sim is updated but this seems to not be the case. So, for you still having CTDs and an older SDK; update it.

This is a strange one and definitely needs investigating.  I can't see how this could influence the levels of CTD's at the moment, but I stand to be corrected.
I thought the SDK was simply items used in scenery / aircraft production and documentation?  Not at the time of a flight?

I have almost given up on CTD's until the WU6.  They are just totally random.  After 5 in a row yesterday, I did a 1 hour and 20 minute flight with the same aircraft and route.
I finally paused this flight (Escape key) due to a parcel delivery.

When I came back about 3 minutes later I was at the desktop once more with no sign of MSFS, and that was while on pause!

My logs show no temperature or utilisation spike at that time - so strange!

Perhaps updating the SDK also updates Simconnect or changes how Simconnect works. Most addon programs use Simconnect to interface with MSFS.

Well, to be honest, I think you need some external program to trigger this if you have CTDs despite an empty community folder. I read somewhere that Simconnect is incorporated in the SDK and if an external program calls functions that maybe don't exist or has changed with the SDK updates, it could very much trigger issues.

Exactly my line of thought.

Before the FBW A320nx was updated I would get a CTD on clicking the Fly Now banner. However, if I turned on Dev Mode before loading the flight it worked just fine time and time again.

Almost hate to do this, but every flight I do is in ONAir and I haven't had a CTD since SU3..  not even in the first SU5 without the first hotfix.

However, what I can do to guarantee a CTD (this was pre SU3 and I just tried it again, and got one) is whilst loading the flight but before pressing fly now, is ANY adjustment to my flight controls will CTD my system.   I use a powered hub for all my flight controls but even just knocking the joystick or touching the rudder pedals will crash me either immediately or less than 5 minutes into the flight.

Now, whether this is relevant to anyone else I have no idea, but since Hotfix2 for SU5 I have flown 25+ Hours, longest flight 3.5 hours and all with OnAir live in the background and not on Dev Mode.

Haha! There goes my glorious theory then. But it is just so incredibly odd.

Might be a train then, after all..

Sorry about that.. but your theory may be right for your set-up...  thats often the way of things at the moment.

All I can do is tell you what it is like for me..  I mean.. bear in mind I have massive overhead of processing power and memory to run almost anything at the same time.  MSFS uses up less than 10% of my CPU load even whilst I am getting 50FPS over central London at 2K monitor settings on Ultra..  so running OnAir is hardly going to margionalise my processing 🙂

Nope. I am convinced after reading hundreds of posts about CTD that most the CTD causes are external to the sim. Your therory is still valid even if  Graham had  none because chances that your setups are identical are very little.

Naah. I think it was a train after all. Another ctd now. I've had it. Time to give up.

So being the masochist I obviously am, I felt I had to try a couple of more times. I am now officially back to 100% CTDs! Wohoo! Four tries going LIPY -> LIMJ ends in CTD about 10NM from RW28. What an absolute freaking joke this has become. You might, as Darth Vader, find my lack of faith disturbing but this is just ridiculous!

I am genuinely happy for you! Would you like to try the route I failed on four occasions? I was flying the WT CJ4. If you manage to complete that without CTD I will take that as a hint from the gods that my time to end this hobby has come...

EDIT: To make each run as close as possible I ran the weather preset: Rain. (other than that I experimented with ATC / no ATC and flight manager / editing the flight myself in the aircraft).
