DC Designs F-14A/B review

Featured Replies

Took longer than I thought to do this one, but it is more comprehensive for that (and long - nearly an hour), but it does cover everything you'd want to know about it:

Good in depth review.
Thanks!

This is awful...

Firstly, no opening guitar rendition of 'Danger Zone', a missed opportunity, and it spoilt the whole video for me.  Video score 0/10.
This upset me so much, it also tainted my view of the aircraft, so 0/10 for that as well now.

Also, some terrible mistakes in the video.  The 'GPU' switch has nothing to do with aircraft power, it is quite obviously the switch for the graphics card (Hello!..  The clue is in the name!) .  By casually flipping it around like that, he is lucky he never got a black screen.
The switch is obviously inoperative at this stage (at least he got that right!).   He needs to be more careful with the switch when the patch is released, or his next video may end up being a lot shorter!

Also, schoolboy error...  A and B version, different engines?  Where did he get that from?  It is so easy to look up, in US military aircraft parlance, 'A' is a single-seater, and 'B' is a twin-seater.  You only have to look at the F-15 and F-16 to realise this - come on!
So also, not showing the faster single seater of the Tomcat in the review video renders the whole thing completely useless in my view.  Waste of time!

It's all gone down hill...

Rob (but call me Bob or Rob, I don't mind).

I like to trick airline passengers into thinking I have my own swimming pool in my back yard by painting a large blue rectangle on my patio.

Intel 14900K in a Z790 motherboard with water cooling, RTX 4080, 32 GB 6000 CL30 DDR5 RAM, W11 and MSFS on Samsung 980 Pro NVME SSD's.  Core Isolation Off, Game Mode Off.

LOL! You're right! I'll add the Tomcat's baggage compartments and stewardess as well, how stupid am I for not thinking of them?!

@Chock  Thanks for taking the time to review the Tomcats 🙂

Ah!  Mr. DC Designs is here.  Well done on the Tomcat!   It captures the spirit of the aircraft very well.
There will be lots of nice repaints out for it.  The first one is already up at flightsim.to.   https://flightsim.to/file/19370/repaint-sundowners-vf-111-squadron-for-dc-design-grumman-f-14a-tomcat-miss-molly

How is your brother coming along with the F-16?  That will be another popular one no doubt.

Thanks, glad you like them, and Miss Molly looks great, that was very fast!

F-16s will be cracking on now, things have been a bit slower there but it's full steam ahead. Aiming for a November launch, F-16C and D in the package with all the usuals - paint kit, manual, custom sounds, everything 🙂

Great review Chuck/Allen, I bought the plane last night. Learning it today.

Good bit of history as well.

Thanks.

I have hidden a post comparing this version to DCS.  If you want to discuss DCS, do it in the DCS forum.

The topic is Chock's review of this version - let's stay with that.

You're welcome. I think you've done a great job on it. It looks great, sounds great, flies great, and has lots of nice touches and loads of things to play with.

And just why should DCS not be mentioned, after all the OP compared it to the DS version on cost, i was merely putting it right that actually everything is modeled in the DCs version hence the cost.

AMD Ryzen 7 5800x3d, MSI X570 Pro, 32 gb DDR4 3600 ram, Gigabyte 6800 16gb GPU, 1x 2tb Samsung  NvMe , 1x 2tb Sabrent NvME, 1x Crucial 4tb Nvme M2 Drive

I learned to fly it. And I love it.

I did get caught out not being able to lower flaps, still made a landing at KPSM long runway w/o over run. I had left the cover over the wing angle lever up and then flaps don't work.

Much easier to land with flaps.

This in my opinion is a really great model, better than the F15 by far. A real joy to fly. And very easy to land even on the Hard Deck so to speak, just have a stable approach or abort early, don't try to save a bad approach.

Just had a left hand operation so I am flying  planes that use the right hand on a joystick. Left is very tender with 40 stitches but it still works fine for throttle control.

I could care less about firing weapons and blowing things up, so I am fine using this in FS2020. Enough mayhem in the real world, I don't need more of it.

Exactly that! No need for you to explain or defend DCS in this discussion. This is about THIS product. If DCS had a model that flew in MSFS, that might be a fair comparison. Otherwise it's like " the xplane version flies very well "- irrelevant.

Great review Alan -  Just purchased it.

Suggestion for further reviews, and this is just a personal preference - can you comment on whether the product is auto installed in the community folder or whether the user can assign an install location. With a lot of people using an addon manager, it would be nice to know.

Thanx!

Good suggestion, will take that one up. I do sometimes mention that on reviews, but I'll make it a box tick item.

Hi Vic,

So what happens when some one compares the FSL to the Fenix? Are those comments going to get hidden? So no more comparison of anything out side MSFS in the MSFS forum?

OK, interesting.

Very on topic, I watched the vid as I sub to help Alan. But will comment later.
