Howard,

may I suggest to open a topic for the next Q&A under

https://forums.flightsimulator.com/c/community/dev-q-a-ask-questions-here/286

and link your video there. Occasionally Jane, the Community Manager, isn't quite clear in expressing issues, and this might help her to identify it.

You can be sure to get my vote. There are several questions in this Q&A thread which I would consider minor compared to that long-standing morphing thingy.

Kind regards, Michael

I see it's already been posted by Ianrivaldosmith Michael. Thanks for the support.

Thanks to everyone for the replies and support. I think we all know that this issue has been around from FSX days, and I seem to remember it being very prevalent in P3d V?? but then on a subsequent version the issue, for me anyway, had almost been eradicated, at least to a high degree. I don't think it can be eradicated completely, but I hope Asobo can go a long way to reduce it to a degree where it isn't so darn obvious.

Orbx are using a proprietary LOD compilation technique in order to make the shape retention more consistent and reduce morphing, while any add-on mesh products using CGL heightmaps also results in less morphing for some reason, even though it's documented by Asobo. The issue seems to occur only with standard BGL heightmaps, like the default mesh.

So? Then why I have basically only morphing issues in Switzerland and not in all other countries I use the non-ORBX meshes? This is exactly the puzzling thing for me, in Switzerland I get morphing with whatever mesh I use, FSDT, Troglodytus or the CGL mesh from flightsim.to. In Austria, Italy and Germany no morphing issues with the Troglodytus meshes, in the Balearic islands morphing issues with another mesh from flightsim.to. and so on, no obvious logic behind...

Greetings, Chris

Hmm, I've just come across this video on YouTube and it's showcasing a freeware scenery of Zion National Park, but hey... look at the incredibly high resolution mesh which is used, I can see hardly any morphiong textures.

If I'm not mistaken this mod creates the cliffs as 3D-objects not as mesh.

Ah, I see, then that would explain things I guess.

However, this must be resolved within the simulator one day. We can't buy an addon mesh for 10 $ per each region where we want to fly.

I don't think that's a solution. Add-on meshes are almost always higher maximum resolution, which would make the problem worse.

Mesh files in sims tend to have have multiple resolutions. The lowest version loads first followed in succession by the higher resolution versions. If the hardware is not up to the task (for example, flying low and fast over complex terrain), terrain "popping" occurs. It also happens in P3d5.

This is happening on 3090’s.
It is also happening in some places and not others.
It has also been happening for the last decade or so.
It’s a sim issue, not a hardware issue.
And for the record, it never happened in Xplane. So, there must be a way to correct or fix it. Somehow.

Agreed, I'm running an i7-10700, 32Gb of RAM with an RTX3090! I mean, what more do you need to run this sim! The issue here is not that the texture loading is happening, it's that the loading is happening at distances far too close to the aircraft. I wager a bet that no one experiences this degree of mesh/texture loading in P3d, I certainly have never experienced it to this degree in P3d.

The mesh is a wireframe of elevation data. Textures are painted onto the mesh by the GPU. If MSFS is like other flightsims, the CPU handles loading the mesh. In P3d5, the GPU uses tessellation to make lower resolution meshes look better. What processor MSFS uses to load its mesh, I have no idea.
